Sukta 83

Mantra 1

पवित्रं ते विततं ब्रह्मणस्पते प्रभुर्गात्राणि पर्येषि विश्वतः । अतप्ततनूर्न तदामो अश्नुते शृतास इद्वहन्तस्तत्समाशत ॥

O Lord of the Word, your filter is stretched wide; master of the workings, you encompass the limbs of being on every side. What is unripe and unheated cannot reach that state; only what has been ripened and made ready bears it and fully attains it.

Mantra 2

तपोष्पवित्रं विततं दिवस्पदे शोचन्तो अस्य तन्तवो व्यस्थिरन् । अवन्त्यस्य पवीतारमाशवो दिवस्पृष्ठमधि तिष्ठन्ति चेतसा ॥

The purifier of tapas is stretched in the seat of heaven; its shining threads are set apart and made firm. Swift forces guard this filter; by consciousness they stand upon the back of heaven—holding the higher plane so the flow may be clarified.

Mantra 3

अरूरुचदुषसः पृश्निरग्रिय उक्षा बिभर्ति भुवनानि वाजयुः । मायाविनो ममिरे अस्य मायया नृचक्षसः पितरो गर्भमा दधुः ॥

The dappled one shines forth at the Dawn, first in the front; the Bull that desires vāja upholds the worlds. By his power of formation the masters of vision measure him; the Fathers with human-seeing sight place the embryo within—setting the delight to be born in us.

Mantra 4

गन्धर्व इत्था पदमस्य रक्षति पाति देवानां जनिमान्यद्भुतः । गृभ्णाति रिपुं निधया निधापतिः सुकृत्तमा मधुनो भक्षमाशत ॥

Thus the Gandharva guards his station; wondrous, he protects the births of the gods. He seizes the hostile force by the hidden placing; the lord of the treasure. The most well-doing powers attain the honeyed portion—delight secured against the spoiler.

Mantra 5

हविर्हविष्मो महि सद्म दैव्यं नभो वसानः परि यास्यध्वरम् । राजा पवित्ररथो वाजमारुहः सहस्रभृष्टिर्जयसि श्रवो बृहत् ॥

O Soma, you are the offering rich with offering-force; clothed with the vast heaven you move around the sacrifice toward the great divine home. A king with the filter as your chariot, mounting vāja, with a thousand-pointed thrust you win the vast hearing—wide fame of the soul’s victory.
