Sukta 82

Mantra 1

असावि सोमो अरुषो वृषा हरी राजेव दस्मो अभि गा अचिक्रदत् । पुनानो वारं पर्येत्यव्ययं श्येनो न योनिं घृतवन्तमासदम् ॥

Soma is pressed out, ruddy and powerful, tawny; like a king, the wondrous one cries out toward the Cows of Light. Purifying, he moves around the imperishable filter, like a hawk to its nest, to the ghee-rich seat.

Mantra 2

कविर्वेधस्या पर्येषि माहिनमत्यो न मृष्टो अभि वाजमर्षसि । अपसेधन्दुरिता सोम मृळय घृतं वसानः परि यासि निर्णिजम् ॥

O Soma, seer and knower, you move all around in your vast greatness; like a well-groomed steed you rush toward vāja—the plenitude of force and victorious fullness. Pushing away the crooked movements of distress, be gracious to us. Clothed in the shining clarity (ghṛta), you circle and take on the radiant robe of purity.

Mantra 3

पर्जन्यः पिता महिषस्य पर्णिनो नाभा पृथिव्या गिरिषु क्षयं दधे । स्वसार आपो अभि गा उतासरन्त्सं ग्रावभिर्नसते वीते अध्वरे ॥

Parjanya, as a father, establishes a dwelling for the mighty one at Earth’s navel, among the heights; and the sister Waters stream toward the rays/cows of light. With the pressing stones they come together in the well-spread sacrifice—powers converging so the delight may be born and made ready.

Mantra 4

जायेव पत्यावधि शेव मंहसे पज्राया गर्भ शृणुहि ब्रवीमि ते । अन्तर्वाणीषु प्र चरा सु जीवसेऽनिन्द्यो वृजने सोम जागृहि ॥

As a wife upon her lord, you bring a benevolent joy and largeness; O embryo of the Pajra-line, hear what I speak to you. Move within the voices—circulate in the speech-forces—for a right and full living. O Soma, blameless one, awaken in the field of our being.

Mantra 5

यथा पूर्वेभ्यः शतसा अमृध्रः सहस्रसाः पर्यया वाजमिन्दो । एवा पवस्व सुविताय नव्यसे तव व्रतमन्वापः सचन्ते ॥

As once you went, O Indu, winning vāja a hundredfold, a thousandfold, without failure—so now purify yourself for a new and wider felicity. The Waters follow your law of working; they consent to your way and support your ordained movement.
