Devata

Soma Pavamāna, oriented to Indra’s empowerment.

Chandas

Likely Triṣṭubh (requires verification).

This short Pavamāna hymn celebrates Soma’s living “waves” as they rush through purification and enter Indra, invigorating him for victorious generosity and the bestowal of light/wealth. It also turns into a direct prayer: purified Soma is asked to “scatter” riches and strengthen vitality and clear insight, while keeping prosperity near. The hymn closes with a broad consecration, inviting Heaven and Earth, Ādityas, and all gods to delight in the purified Soma.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Forward surge the waves of Soma in his purification; fair-formed, they go to Indra’s belly. When uplifted with curd (with the thickened richness), pressed out, they exhilarate the hero for the giving of the Rays of Light—by glory they raise him upward.

Mantra 2

For Soma indeed speeds to the jars, like a swift steed bearing the load, a bull with rapid courses. Then the knower attains what belongs to the twofold birth of the gods—what is from yonder and what is from here.

Mantra 3

Come to us, O Soma in purification, and scatter wealth of being; O Indu, become for us a great giver of plenitude. Teach us the increase of life and strength with a clear seeing; do not pour our gain far away from us.

Mantra 4

May Pūṣan come to us with the purifying Soma, the good givers; may Mitra and Varuṇa come in one accord. May Bṛhaspati, the Maruts, Vāyu, the Aśvins, Tvaṣṭṛ, Savitṛ, Su-yamā, Sarasvatī draw near.

Mantra 5

May Heaven and Earth, who set all in motion, may Aryaman, the god, and Aditi the disposer, may Bhaga, Nṛśaṃsa, and the wide midspace—may all the gods delight in the purifying Soma.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn addresses Soma in his purified form (Soma Pavamāna/Indu). It especially highlights Soma’s role in empowering Indra, while ending with an all-gods (Viśvedevas) appreciation of Soma.

In ritual language it describes the purified Soma drink being offered to Indra, which ‘fills’ him with exhilaration and strength. Symbolically it suggests purified energy entering the power of action and victory.

It asks Soma to scatter wealth and plenitude, increase life and strength, grant clear insight, and keep one’s gains close—so prosperity is not ‘poured away’ far from the worshipper.
