Soma Pavamāna

This short Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he rushes through the filter in powerful streams, becoming clarified and awakening inspired speech (vāc) in the worshippers. It follows the ritual movement of Soma from flowing purification to his “seating” in the vats, culminating in an explicit injunction to press the sweetest Soma for Indra, so the divine host may enter exhilaration and strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

It celebrates Soma as he is purified through the filter, becomes clarified in the vats, and is then pressed as the sweetest offering—especially for Indra—to bring strength and inspired speech.

Because purified Soma is seen as awakening inner inspiration: as the offering becomes clear, the worshipper’s mind and speech become clear and powerful for prayer and insight.

The deity praised is Soma in his purifying form (Pavamāna), but the final verse highlights that the refined Soma is pressed for Indra, the thunderbolt-bearer, to empower him and the divine host.
