Sukta 9.29
Soma Pavamāna (purifying Soma)
This short Pavamāna hymn celebrates Soma as the mighty, self-purifying stream whose flowing radiance follows the Gods and strengthens divine action. It asks Soma to win “all riches” (both earthly and heavenly), to drive away hostility and inner resistance, and to bring luminous power (dyumat śuṣma) for victory and upliftment.
Mantra 1
Forth flow the streams of this strong One; by the pressed Soma’s might they run. They move in the wake of the Gods, adorning and empowering the divine workings within us.
Mantra 2
The seers, singing with their word, cleanse the coursing steed; the makers of hymn purify him—him who is born as Light, worthy of the high chant of realization.
Mantra 3
O Soma, mighty to endure, those powers of yours—while you are purifying, O master of abundance—grow into the ocean of the inspired chant, vast and sustaining.
Mantra 4
Winning for us all the inner riches, flow, O Soma, in your stream; drive away the hatreds and resistances, straight to their end.
Mantra 5
Guard us well, O flaming-pure One, from the noise and outcry of anyone at all— from the blame and negation at the point where we seek release.
Mantra 6
O Indu, flow in your stream bringing the earthly and the heavenly plenitude; bring to us the luminous force, the shining might of victory in the soul.
It praises Soma as he is purified while flowing in streams, and it asks him to bring wealth, remove hostility, and give luminous strength and victory.
Pavamāna means “purifying” or “being purified.” In the ritual, Soma is filtered, and the hymn celebrates that cleansing flow as sacred and power-giving.
It asks for both earthly prosperity (pārthiva rayi) and heavenly or higher gifts (divya rayi), along with inner brilliance and strength (dyumat śuṣma).
