Sukta 9.28
Soma Pavamāna
This short Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he is set in motion by human hands and powers, rushing through the woolen filter to become a clarified, chosen stream for the gods. Soma is celebrated as all-knowing and as the lord of mind, a bull-like force driven by “ten kindred powers,” filling the vessels prepared for offering. The hymn culminates in Soma’s invincible purifying flow that brings divine heroism and destroys harmful, false speech (aghaśaṃsa).
Mantra 1
This Soma, the plenitude of force, is set in place by the human powers; the knower of all, lord of the mind, he runs wide through the woollen strainer, releasing the chosen currents.
Mantra 2
This Soma, pressed for the gods, has flowed through the filter; entering all the seats and domains of being, he pervades and establishes the divine order within.
Mantra 3
This godhead of Soma brightens upon the womb of manifestation, immortal; a slayer of the Coverer, most full in the gaining of the gods—he brings the divine powers to our working.
Mantra 4
This Bull-force bellows as he is urged on by the ten kindred powers; he runs toward the vessels, filling the prepared receptacles of the being.
Mantra 5
This Soma, while purifying, has made the Sun shine out; wide in his vision and movement among men, the knower of all enters and illumines all the domains of our being.
Mantra 6
This Soma, mighty and invincible, flows while purifying; he brings the heroic powers of the gods, and slays the hostile speech of falsehood and sin within us.
It praises Soma as he is pressed and purified, flowing through the woolen strainer into vessels for offering, while granting strength, clarity of mind, and protection.
These are key parts of the Soma ritual: the juice is filtered through wool to become clear (pavamāna) and then collected in vessels (droṇa) before being offered to the gods.
It asks Soma to remove harmful, deceitful, or sinful talk—both outward negativity and inner false narratives—so the sacrificer’s speech and mind become truthful and strong.
