Sukta 81

Mantra 1

आ तू न इन्द्र क्षुमन्तं चित्रं ग्राभं सं गृभाय । महाहस्ती दक्षिणेन ॥

Come to us, O Indra; seize together for us the bright and abundant grasp of power—thou of the great hand—by thy right hand of effective action.

Mantra 2

विद्मा हि त्वा तुविकूर्मिं तुविदेष्णं तुवीमघम् । तुविमात्रमवोभिः ॥

For we know thee as wide-ranging in thy movements, vast in thy giving, mighty in thy bounty—immeasurable in thy measures—by thy many protections that uphold us.

Mantra 3

नहि त्वा शूर देवा न मर्तासो दित्सन्तम् । भीमं न गां वारयन्ते ॥

None can hold thee back, O hero—neither gods nor mortals—when thou art resolved to give; as none can restrain a fearsome bull in its rush.

Mantra 4

एतो न्विन्द्रं स्तवामेशानं वस्वः स्वराजम् । न राधसा मर्धिषन्नः ॥

Come then—let us affirm Indra in the chant, the master of the riches, the self-king in his own sovereignty; may he not crush us by his bounty, but set it rightly upon us.

Mantra 5

प्र स्तोषदुप गासिषच्छ्रवत्साम गीयमानम् । अभि राधसा जुगुरत् ॥

Let the praise surge forth; let the chant draw near—may he hear the sāman as it is being sung. May they awaken toward him with the bounty, pressing close in the joy of the offering.

Mantra 6

आ नो भर दक्षिणेनाभि सव्येन प्र मृश । इन्द्र मा नो वसोर्निर्भाक् ॥

Bring to us with thy right hand; with thy left too touch and extend it toward us. O Indra, do not cut us off from the plenitude of being, do not portion us out away from the treasure.

Mantra 7

उप क्रमस्वा भर धृषता धृष्णो जनानाम् । अदाशूष्टरस्य वेदः ॥

Step near and bring it, O bold one, with thy daring, thou who art the most daring among men. Thou knowest the knowledge of him who gives not—the secret of the non-offerer and how to master that obstruction.

Mantra 8

इन्द्र य उ नु ते अस्ति वाजो विप्रेभिः सनित्वः । अस्माभिः सु तं सनुहि ॥

O Indra, whatever plenitude of force is thine, to be won with the seers in the victory of gaining—grant us to win that well, together with us; make it ours in the right way.

Mantra 9

सद्योजुवस्ते वाजा अस्मभ्यं विश्वश्चन्द्राः । वशैश्च मक्षू जरन्ते ॥

Thy swiftly-moving powers of plenitude, all-luminous, press forward to us; and by their mastering energies they quickly bring about the ripening of our growth.
