Sukta 7.92
Vasiṣṭha (Maṇḍala 7)
Vāyu
Jagatī (likely; longer cadence typical in Vāyu invitations—verify in metrical index)
This short Vasiṣṭha hymn is an invitation to Vāyu to come swiftly with his many niyuts (yoked teams), take his seat at the sacrifice, and drink the Soma as the “first-drinker.” It repeatedly links Vāyu’s arrival and exhilaration with tangible blessings—wealth, strength/heroic power, cattle, horses, and ongoing protection through svasti (well-being). The purpose is both liturgical (calling the deity to the pressing) and pragmatic (securing prosperity and safety for the worshippers).
Mantra 1
Come, O Vāyu, take thy seat, O pure-drinker, near to us; a thousand are thy yoked powers, O bearer of all boons. I bring to thee the rapture-draught, the soma-essence, which thou, O god, hast set to drink first—before all others.
Mantra 2
Forward has the swift-pressing priest taken his stand in the inner sacrifice, that Indra and Vāyu may drink the soma. For the adhvaryus, aspiring to the divine, bring forward for you two the foremost honeyed essence with their effective powers of skill.
Mantra 3
With those yoked powers by which thou comest to the giver, O Vāyu, to the house of the worshipper, bring down for us a wealth of rich enjoyment. Bring down also the hero-force, and the luminous herds and the swift energies—thy bounty.
Mantra 4
O Vāyus (powers of the Life-Wind), delighting in Indra, godward and eager for the increase, noble in the march—may we, with our illumined leaders, smite the Vṛtras. May we be conquerors in the battle, overcoming the hostile forces with our strong men.
Mantra 5
Come to us with thy yoked powers by hundreds and by thousands; draw near to the sacrifice, to the offering-work. O Vāyu, in this pressing be filled with rapture; and do you guard us always with the harmonies of well-being.
The hymn invokes Vāyu, the Vedic Wind deity, asking him to come swiftly to the sacrifice and drink the Soma.
It highlights Vāyu’s special precedence at the Soma-pressing: he is invited to take the first draught, signaling his immediate presence and favor.
It asks for prosperity and enjoyment (wealth), strength and heroic vigor, cattle and horses (resources and power), and continual protection through svasti (well-being).
