This hymn praises Agni as Vaiśvānara—the all-pervading Fire born from Ṛta (cosmic order), set as the “head of heaven” and the guiding power on earth. It presents Agni as the seer-king and “guest” of peoples who mediates offerings, expands the luminous realms, and guards immortality, so that gods and humans may share in life, order, and protection.

Mantra 1

मूर्धानं दिवो अरतिं पृथिव्या वैश्वानरमृत आ जातमग्निम् । कविं सम्राजमतिथिं जनानामासन्ना पात्रं जनयन्त देवाः ॥

The gods brought to birth Agni Vaiśvānara, born from the Truth—head of heaven and guiding course of earth: the seer, the universal king, the guest of the peoples, the near and ready vessel for the offering within us.

Mantra 2

नाभिं यज्ञानां सदनं रयीणां महामाहावमभि सं नवन्त । वैश्वानरं रथ्यमध्वराणां यज्ञस्य केतुं जनयन्त देवाः ॥

The gods fashioned Vaiśvānara as the navel of the sacrifices, the home of plenitudes, the great call of invocation. They brought forth the chariot-course of the journeys of offering, the banner-sign of the sacrifice—its guiding light.

Mantra 3

त्वद्विप्रो जायते वाज्यग्ने त्वद्वीरासो अभिमातिषाहः । वैश्वानर त्वमस्मासु धेहि वसूनि राजन्त्स्पृहयाय्याणि ॥

From you, O Agni, is born the inspired seer with the plenitude of force; from you arise the heroic powers that overcome hostile thought. O Vaiśvānara, place within us the desirable riches, O King—treasures we long to embody.

Mantra 4

त्वां विश्वे अमृत जायमानं शिशुं न देवा अभि सं नवन्ते । तव क्रतुभिरमृतत्वमायन्वैश्वानर यत्पित्रोरदीदेः ॥

All the gods gather around you, O immortal, when you are born—like around a newborn child. By your powers of will they attain immortality, O Vaiśvānara, because you shine between the two parents.

Mantra 5

वैश्वानर तव तानि व्रतानि महान्यग्ने नकिरा दधर्ष । यज्जायमानः पित्रोरुपस्थेऽविन्दः केतुं वयुनेष्वह्नाम् ॥

O Vaiśvānara, yours are those great laws of working, O Agni—none can violate them. When you are born in the lap of the two parents, you find the guiding light in the ordered workings of the days.

Mantra 6

वैश्वानरस्य विमितानि चक्षसा सानूनि दिवो अमृतस्य केतुना । तस्येदु विश्वा भुवनाधि मूर्धनि वया इव रुरुहुः सप्त विस्रुहः ॥

By the seer-vision (cakṣasā) the high ridges of Heaven are measured out for Vaiśvānara, by the luminous banner of the Immortal. Upon his very head all the worlds are set; like winged powers they rise—seven currents that stream apart, the many-rayed movements of the one Flame.

वि यो रजांस्यमिमीत सुक्रतुर्वैश्वानरो वि दिवो रोचना कविः । परि यो विश्वा भुवनानि पप्रथेऽदब्धो गोपा अमृतस्य रक्षिता ॥

He who, wise in power (sukratu), has measured out the spaces (rajāṃsi), Vaiśvānara the seer-poet, and has opened wide the shining realms of heaven. He who spreads around all the worlds—unbewildered guardian, protector of the Immortal—he keeps the truth of being safe in us.
