Sukta 40

Mantra 1

इन्द्र पिब तुभ्यं सुतो मदायाव स्य हरी वि मुचा सखाया । उत प्र गाय गण आ निषद्याथा यज्ञाय गृणते वयो धाः ॥

Indra, drink: for you the Soma is pressed for ecstasy; unyoke your two bay steeds, O companion. And sing forth; sit down with the host—then to the sacrifice, to the one who hymns, give the plenitude of power for the embodied life.

Mantra 2

अस्य पिब यस्य जज्ञान इन्द्र मदाय क्रत्वे अपिबो विरप्शिन् । तमु ते गावो नर आपो अद्रिरिन्दुं समह्यन्पीतये समस्मै ॥

Drink of this—of that which, once born in you, Indra, you drank for ecstasy and for will-force, O wide-working one. For you the rays, the strong powers, the waters, and the pressing-stone have together driven this drop of Soma, together for your drinking, together for you.

Mantra 3

समिद्धे अग्नौ सुत इन्द्र सोम आ त्वा वहन्तु हरयो वहिष्ठाः । त्वायता मनसा जोहवीमीन्द्रा याहि सुविताय महे नः ॥

When Agni is kindled and Soma is pressed, O Indra, let the most carrying bay steeds bring you. With a mind turned wholly to you I call you: come, Indra, for our great good passage and victorious progress.

Mantra 4

आ याहि शश्वदुशता ययाथेन्द्र महा मनसा सोमपेयम् । उप ब्रह्माणि शृणव इमा नोऽथा ते यज्ञस्तन्वे वयो धात् ॥

Come, as ever, by the path you love, Indra, with the vast mind, to the drinking of Soma. Hear near to you these our inspired words; then may your sacrifice set vigor into your own body of manifestation.

Mantra 5

यदिन्द्र दिवि पार्ये यदृधग्यद्वा स्वे सदने यत्र वासि । अतो नो यज्ञमवसे नियुत्वान्त्सजोषाः पाहि गिर्वणो मरुद्भिः ॥

Whether, Indra, you are beyond in heaven, or apart, or in your own seat wherever you dwell—thence guard our sacrifice for its protecting force. Harnessed, in one accord, protect us, O lord of the chant, together with the Maruts.
