Triṣṭubh (probable; needs confirmation)
This brief Aśvin hymn is a dawn-invocation urging worshippers to call the Twin Riders first at daybreak, so they may arrive swiftly and drink the soma before hostile, “greedy” forces obstruct the rite. It praises their radiant chariot and mind-swift, wind-rushing help that carries the devotee beyond distress, concluding with a prayer for ever-new protection, prosperity (rayi), heroic strength, and enduring good fortune.
Mantra 1
Worship first the two who come at dawn; before the greedy forces seize it, drink, O radiant ones. For at dawn the Ashvins establish the sacrifice; the seers, sharers from of old, proclaim them forth.
Mantra 2
Worship in the morning; urge on the Ashvins. In the evening there is no godward offering that they accept. Another than us may worship; yet in their help, each earlier sacrificer becomes the more beloved.
Mantra 3
Your chariot turns hither, bearing the dappled steeds—golden-bodied, honey-hued, dripping with clarified delight. Mind-swift, wind-rushing Ashvins, by it you pass beyond all our distresses.
Mantra 4
Whoever has served the Nasatyas most, and in the distribution has offered even the least draught, for him they foster his offspring by their quiet powers; and he, with lights not turned downward, moves forward unceasingly.
Mantra 5
May we arrive into the harmony of the Ashvins by their ever-new protection—by their bliss-bringing, right-leading guidance. Bring to us the rayi, the fullness of being, and also heroic powers; bring all the deathless felicities.
The Aśvins are twin Vedic deities linked with dawn, famous for swift rescue and healing. The hymn calls them as the earliest guests of the morning sacrifice.
Dawn is their special time, and the sukta treats them as the ones who “set” or establish the sacrifice at daybreak. Invoking them first symbolizes securing the rite and removing obstacles before they arise.
It asks for ever-new protection, right-leading guidance, release from distress, prosperity (rayi), heroic strength, and lasting good fortune.
