Sukta 49

Mantra 1

देवं वो अद्य सवितारमेषे भगं च रत्नं विभजन्तमायोः । आ वां नरा पुरुभुजा ववृत्यां दिवेदिवे चिदश्विना सखीयन् ॥

Today I seek for you the god Savitṛ, and Bhaga too, who apportions the treasure for life’s increase. And to you, O two lords who enjoy in many ways, O Aśvins, I would turn day by day, desiring your friendship.

Mantra 2

प्रति प्रयाणमसुरस्य विद्वान्त्सूक्तैर्देवं सवितारं दुवस्य । उप ब्रुवीत नमसा विजानञ्ज्येष्ठं च रत्नं विभजन्तमायोः ॥

Knowing the forward-going movement of the Asura, with well-wrought hymns serve the god Savitṛ. Let him speak near with reverence, discerning the eldest treasure that he distributes for the growth of life.

Mantra 3

अदत्रया दयते वार्याणि पूषा भगो अदितिर्वस्त उस्रः । इन्द्रो विष्णुर्वरुणो मित्रो अग्निरहानि भद्रा जनयन्त दस्माः ॥

By the undiminishing giving, Pūṣan grants the desirable boons; Bhaga, Aditi, and the bright Dawns clothe us in increase. Indra, Viṣṇu, Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni—these wonderful powers bring forth days that are auspicious.

Mantra 4

तन्नो अनर्वा सविता वरूथं तत्सिन्धव इषयन्तो अनु ग्मन् । उप यद्वोचे अध्वरस्य होता रायः स्याम पतयो वाजरत्नाः ॥

May Savitṛ, the unerring, be for us that protecting refuge; and may the rivers, pressing forward with their urge, follow after it. When I, the hotṛ of the sacrifice, speak near in the rite, may we become lords of spiritual plenitude and treasures of force.

Mantra 5

प्र ये वसुभ्य ईवदा नमो दुर्ये मित्रे वरुणे सूक्तवाचः । अवैत्वभ्वं कृणुता वरीयो दिवस्पृथिव्योरवसा मदेम ॥

Forward go our words of good utterance, bearing the homage that reaches the Vasus, and that is hard to resist for Mitra and Varuṇa. Let the vast obstruction sink away; make for us a wider, freer path. By the fostering power of Heaven and Earth may we grow glad in the inner plenitude.
