Devata

Agni

This short Agni hymn praises the fire-god as the wise, ancient Seer and the upholder of riches and stability, kindled and clarified by ghee. It presents Agni as ever-newly born in the ritual cycles, a fierce protector who drives away hostility, and as the hidden “step in the cave” who awakens great abundance and brings Atri across darkness.

Mantras

Mantra 1

I bring forth the word to the Wise Disposer, to the Seer who is to be known, for his ancient glory. Clarified by the ghee, the mighty Lord of conscious force, benevolent, Agni—upholder of plenitude, foundation and bearer of the riches of being.

Mantra 2

By the Truth (ṛta) they uphold the Truth’s foundation in the supreme expanse, in the luminous power of the sacrifice. Seated in the support of Heaven’s laws, they, the strong ones, by what is born in them, attain and master what is yet unborn.

Mantra 3

The young slayer of anguish extends his body; he spreads a vast strength, hard to cross, for the ancient work. Newly born through the cycles, he drives forward—like a lion in wrath, around whom the adversaries stand at a distance.

Mantra 4

Like a mother, when you bear and widen yourself, you nurture each and every people and you give them sight. Taking on strength after strength for the growing of the being, you move everywhere by your own self, assuming diverse forms.

Mantra 5

May the plenitude of your force guard the farthest limit; wide is the milking, the foundation of your divine fullness. Like a traveler who hides a footing in a secret place, you place the step in the cave; awakening the great plenitude, you bring Atri across (out of obscurity).
