Sukta 49

Mantra 1

शंसा महामिन्द्रं यस्मिन्विश्वा आ कृष्टयः सोमपाः काममव्यन् । यं सुक्रतुं धिषणे विभ्वतष्टं घनं वृत्राणां जनयन्त देवाः ॥

I proclaim the great Indra in whom all the peoples who drink Soma have woven their desire; him, the strong-willed, fashioned in the two Inspirations, the smiter of obstructions—the gods brought him to birth.

Mantra 2

यं नु नकिः पृतनासु स्वराजं द्विता तरति नृतमं हरिष्ठाम् । इनतमः सत्वभिर्यो ह शूषैः पृथुज्रया अमिनादायुर्दस्योः ॥

Whom none surpasses in the battles, the self-ruling, the best of men, seated on the tawny steeds; most driving with his powers, who with his impetuous strengths and broad onset diminished the life of the Dasyu (the dark adversary).

Mantra 3

सहावा पृत्सु तरणिर्नार्वा व्यानशी रोदसी मेहनावान् । भगो न कारे हव्यो मतीनां पितेव चारुः सुहवो वयोधाः ॥

Strong in the clash of inner battles, he is the crosser like a swift steed; he widens the two worlds (the inner and the outer) and is a mighty pourer of the fruitful waters. Like Bhaga in the act of giving, he is to be invoked by our inspired thoughts; like a father, he is beautiful and easy to call, establishing in us the breadth of life-force.

Mantra 4

धर्ता दिवो रजसस्पृष्ट ऊर्ध्वो रथो न वायुर्वसुभिर्नियुत्वान् । क्षपां वस्ता जनिता सूर्यस्य विभक्ता भागं धिषणेव वाजम् ॥

He is the upholder of heaven, set upon the back of the mid-world; rising upward like a chariot, like Vāyu yoked with the Vasus. He is the weaver of the nights and the begetter of the Sun; he apportions the share, and like Dhīṣaṇā he distributes the plenitude of force (vāja) for our becoming.

Mantra 5

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

For our well-being we call the bounteous Indra, the most manful in this pressing struggle, in the winning of plenitude. May we have him who listens, the fierce power for our help in the battles—slaying the Vṛtras (obstructions) and conquering the riches (the many treasures of being).
