Sukta 22

Mantra 1

अयं सो अग्निर्यस्मिन्त्सोममिन्द्रः सुतं दधे जठरे वावशानः । सहस्रिणं वाजमत्यं न सप्तिं ससवान्त्सन्त्स्तूयसे जातवेदः ॥

This is that Agni in whom Indra has placed the pressed Soma within his belly, rejoicing. Having won the thousandfold plenitude of force—like a swift steed, like a coursing racer—you are praised, O Jātavedas, as the victorious carrier of the inner delight.

Mantra 2

अग्ने यत्ते दिवि वर्चः पृथिव्यां यदोषधीष्वप्स्वा यजत्र । येनान्तरिक्षमुर्वाततन्थ त्वेषः स भानुरर्णवो नृचक्षाः ॥

O Agni, whatever is your shining in heaven, on earth, in the plants, and in the waters—O adorable—by which you have stretched the wide mid-world: that blazing radiance is an ocean with the vision of men; it opens sight in us toward the vast order.

Mantra 3

अग्ने दिवो अर्णमच्छा जिगास्यच्छा देवाँ ऊचिषे धिष्ण्या ये । या रोचने परस्तात्सूर्यस्य याश्चावस्तादुपतिष्ठन्त आपः ॥

O Agni, you seek the flood of heaven; you call the gods who are the true seats of power. The waters that stand in the luminous realm beyond the Sun, and those that stand below—may they support the ascent and the descent of illumination in us.

Mantra 4

पुरीष्यासो अग्नयः प्रावणेभिः सजोषसः । जुषन्तां यज्ञमद्रुहोऽनमीवा इषो महीः ॥

May the purīṣya fires—moving together along their slopes—accept the sacrifice in one accord, without hostility and without affliction; may the great nourishing powers (iṣaḥ) increase in us, establishing a wide and healthy foundation for the work.

Mantra 5

इळामग्ने पुरुदंसं सनिं गोः शश्वत्तमं हवमानाय साध । स्यान्नः सूनुस्तनयो विजावाग्ने सा ते सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे ॥

O Agni, accomplish for the one who calls thee the Ila—full of luminous insight—rich in manifold workings, the ever-enduring winning of the Rays (go); may there be for us a son, a child, victorious in births and growth. May that be thy happy-minded grace for us.
