Sukta 9

Mantra 1

नि होता होतृषदने विदानस्त्वेषो दीदिवाँ असदत्सुदक्षः । अदब्धव्रतप्रमतिर्वसिष्ठः सहस्रम्भरः शुचिजिह्वो अग्निः ॥

Down he has taken his seat—the Priest in the priestly seat—knowing the right way; the intense one, shining, of good skill. Vasiṣṭha, the unbetrayable will and sure discernment, Agni with the pure tongue, the bringer of a thousand powers, is established within us.

Mantra 2

त्वं दूतस्त्वमु नः परस्पास्त्वं वस्य आ वृषभ प्रणेता । अग्ने तोकस्य नस्तने तनूनामप्रयुच्छन्दीद्यद्बोधि गोपाः ॥

You are the messenger; you are our far-protector; you are the leader toward the better, O Bull of force. O Agni, for our offspring and for the extension of our being, wake in us as the guardian—unfailing, blazing with light.

Mantra 3

विधेम ते परमे जन्मन्नग्ने विधेम स्तोमैरवरे सधस्थे । यस्माद्योनेरुदारिथा यजे तं प्र त्वे हवींषि जुहुरे समिद्धे ॥

We would serve you in your supreme birth, O Agni; we would serve you with our hymns in the lower seat of manifestation. From whatever womb you have arisen upward, to that you are offered: therefore, when you are kindled, the oblations are poured forward into you.

Mantra 4

अग्ने यजस्व हविषा यजीयाञ्छ्रुष्टी देष्णमभि गृणीहि राधः । त्वं ह्यसि रयिपती रयीणां त्वं शुक्रस्य वचसो मनोता ॥

O Agni, sacrifice with the offering, O most worthy of sacrifice; accept with attentive hearing the gift, and affirm the plenitude. For you are the lord of the riches: you are the thinker and fulfiller of the luminous word.

Mantra 5

उभयं ते न क्षीयते वसव्यं दिवेदिवे जायमानस्य दस्म । कृधि क्षुमन्तं जरितारमग्ने कृधि पतिं स्वपत्यस्य रायः ॥

Twofold is your wealth that does not diminish, day by day as you are ever being born, O wonder-worker. Make the singer full of power, O Agni; make him lord of the riches that bring noble offspring and right mastery.

Mantra 6

सैनानीकेन सुविदत्रो अस्मे यष्टा देवाँ आयजिष्ठः स्वस्ति । अदब्धो गोपा उत नः परस्पा अग्ने द्युमदुत रेवद्दिदीहि ॥

With your leading front, O well-finding one, be for us the sacrificer who best worships the gods for our well-being. Unharmed, be the guardian of the lights and our far-protector; O Agni, shine upon us with luminous force and with fullness.
