Sukta 2.25
Gṛtsamada (traditional ascription)
Brahmaṇaspati (with Agni as invoked instrument)
Jagatī (probable for RV 2.25 refrain structure; confirm by metrical count)
This short hymn praises Brahmaṇaspati as the lord of sacred speech and ritual mastery who “yokes” the powers together for successful action, especially through the kindling and forward-driving force of Agni. It depicts him as irresistible against crooked opposition, breaking restraints and opening safe shelter and prosperity for the devotee. The repeated refrain emphasizes his capacity to unite allies and inner faculties into one effective, victorious team.
Mantra 1
Kindling Agni, he wins for the worshipper; having fashioned the Word, he grows intense, one whose offering is accepted. By what is born he overpasses what is born; he moves forward, and makes each and every yoke-fellow—Brahmaṇaspati, who joins the powers for the work.
Mantra 2
With heroes he wins heroes for the striving one; with the Rays he spreads the plenitude and awakens it by his own self-being. Then his lineage and his offspring grow—he for whom Brahmaṇaspati makes every yoke-fellow power.
Mantra 3
Like a river in flood, forceful, against the crooked adversary, he smites with power as a bull strikes down the bound restraints. Like Agni’s forward drive, there is no turning him back—he for whom Brahmaṇaspati makes every yoke-fellow power.
Mantra 4
To him the divine streams flow, unbroken; with his powers he goes first among the Rays. With energy that cannot be crushed he smites by might—he for whom Brahmaṇaspati makes every yoke-fellow power.
Mantra 5
For him indeed all the rivers set themselves in motion; many unbroken shelters they establish. In the gods’ favour he grows fortunate and increases—he for whom Brahmaṇaspati makes every yoke-fellow power.
Brahmaṇaspati is the deity of brahman—powerful, well-formed sacred speech and priestly insight that makes rituals and intentions succeed. In this hymn he is also the one who unites all needed powers into a single effective effort.
The refrain highlights the central idea: Brahmaṇaspati “makes each and every yoke-fellow,” meaning he brings allies, energies, and faculties into cooperation so the work can be completed without obstruction.
It asks for unstoppable progress, the breaking of restraints and hostile resistance, and the establishment of “acchidra śarma”—unbroken protection and secure well-being—along with growth and good fortune under divine favor.
