Sukta 10.148

Devata

Indra

This short Indra-hymn centers on the Soma-pressers’ praise, asking Indra to bring suvita (a “good passage” and right success) and the invigorating vāja that accompanies his vast heroic power. The poet frames worship as a mutual joy: humans gladden Indra with Soma and nourishing offerings, and Indra in return upholds their inner strength and embodied life. The hymn culminates in a vivid summons from the wide earth, with swift horses carrying inspired speech toward Indra’s ghee-bright seat.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Indra, we who have pressed out (the Soma) praise thee; we who have set it flowing invoke the Vāja of thy vast manly might. Bring to us the happy going, the right success, in which we may win by our own inner being and by our embodied nature, upheld by thee.

Mantra 2

Mighty art thou, O Indra the hero, born to subdue the serving powers, helped by the Sun. The secret that is placed in the secrecy, hidden in the waters, thou bearest—like Soma in its outflowing: the concealed delight held within the streams of consciousness.

Mantra 3

O noble one, chant forth the words; knowing, a seer among seers, delighting in the right thought. May we be those who gladden thee with Soma, and also with the offerings that nourish thee, O bearer-on-the-chariot: so the mutual joy may be established.

Mantra 4

These words of power I proclaim to thee, O Indra: give to the heroic powers of men, O hero, thy might. Become one in will with those in whom thou takest delight; and protect both the singer of the hymn and those who are near and dependent.

Mantra 5

Hear the call, O Indra the hero, from the wide earth; and be praised with the hymns of the desirable one. Toward thy seat, rich in clarified light (ghṛta), the swift horses—like waves driven by the slopes—bear the inspired utterances onward.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Indra to bring suvita (a good, successful course) and vāja (victorious strength and the prize of effort), so life and action prosper under his support.

Because Indra is invoked as the deity who responds powerfully to Soma; the hymn presents Soma-pressing and praise as the means to invite his presence and help.

It suggests success on two levels—through one’s inner being (tmanā) and through embodied life and practical activity (tanā)—both upheld by Indra.
