Indra-Vāyu and Bṛhaspati
This short hymn is a communal invocation that gathers key Vedic powers—Agni, Soma, the Ādityas, Viṣṇu, Sūrya, and especially Indra–Vāyu with Bṛhaspati—asking them to turn toward the worshippers with favor and help. Its practical aim is prosperity and protection, and its social aim is concord: that in the assembly all people may become “of one good mind” in their coming together.
Mantra 1
अग्ने अच्छा वदेह नः प्रत्यङ्नः सुमना भव । प्र नो यच्छ विशस्पते धनदा असि नस्त्वम् ॥
Agni, speak towards us here; turn to us and become gracious in thy mind. Grant forward to us, O lord of the peoples; thou art our giver of the true riches of being.
Mantra 2
प्र नो यच्छत्वर्यमा प्र भगः प्र बृहस्पतिः । प्र देवाः प्रोत सूनृता रायो देवी ददातु नः ॥
May Aryaman forward for us the right leading; may Bhaga press forward the delight of our portion; may Bṛhaspati bring forward the vast inspired Word. May the Gods advance (our becoming); and may the Goddess Sūnṛtā—true and luminous speech—grant us the plenitude of inner riches (rāyas).
Mantra 3
सोमं राजानमवसेऽग्निं गीर्भिर्हवामहे । आदित्यान्विष्णुं सूर्यं ब्रह्माणं च बृहस्पतिम् ॥
For our help we call Soma the King and Agni with our illumined utterances; we call the Ādityas, Vishnu, Surya, and Brahmāṇa, and Bṛhaspati—powers that widen, uphold, and reveal the truth-consciousness within us.
Mantra 4
इन्द्रवायू बृहस्पतिं सुहवेह हवामहे । यथा नः सर्व इज्जनः संगत्यां सुमना असत् ॥
Indra-and-Vāyu and Bṛhaspati—easy to call—we invoke here, so that in our coming together all our people may become of one good mind and consenting will.
Mantra 5
अर्यमणं बृहस्पतिमिन्द्रं दानाय चोदय । वातं विष्णुं सरस्वतीं सवितारं च वाजिनम् ॥
Urge Aryaman, Bṛhaspati, and Indra toward the giving; urge Vāta, Vishnu, Sarasvatī, and Savitṛ the Vājin—so that the powers of order, word, force, breath, wideness, inspired stream, and luminous impulsion may pour their gifts into our becoming.
Mantra 6
त्वं नो अग्ने अग्निभिर्ब्रह्म यज्ञं च वर्धय । त्वं नो देवतातये रायो दानाय चोदय ॥
O Agni, increase for us—by thy flames—the brahman (the inspired seeing-word) and the yajña (the inner offering). And do thou impel us toward the state of the gods, and toward the giving of the plenitude of riches (rāyas).
It asks the gods to support the rite and the community—granting prosperity and, most importantly, harmony so that everyone in the gathering thinks and acts together with goodwill.
