Sukta 147

Mantra 1

कथा ते अग्ने शुचयन्त आयोर्ददाशुर्वाजेभिराशुषाणाः । उभे यत्तोके तनये दधाना ऋतस्य सामन्रणयन्त देवाः ॥

How do they—purifying themselves—give to you, O Agni, and press forward with plenitudes of force? When they establish both the child and the offspring, the gods make the chant of ṛta resound.

Mantra 2

बोधा मे अस्य वचसो यविष्ठ मंहिष्ठस्य प्रभृतस्य स्वधावः । पीयति त्वो अनु त्वो गृणाति वन्दारुस्ते तन्वं वन्दे अग्ने ॥

Awaken to this my word, O youngest, O self-powered one, brought forward from the greatest abundance. The worshipper drinks you in, follows you, sings after you; I bow to your very body, O Agni.

Mantra 3

ये पायवो मामतेयं ते अग्ने पश्यन्तो अन्धं दुरितादरक्षन् । ररक्ष तान्त्सुकृतो विश्ववेदा दिप्सन्त इद्रिपवो नाह देभुः ॥

Those protectors, your Māmateya ones, O Agni, seeing the blind darkness, guarded him from evil. Protect them, O all-knowing, for they are doers of the good; though enemies desire it, they do not harm at all.

Mantra 4

यो नो अग्ने अररिवाँ अघायुररातीवा मर्चयति द्वयेन । मन्त्रो गुरुः पुनरस्तु सो अस्मा अनु मृक्षीष्ट तन्वं दुरुक्तैः ॥

O Agni, whoever among us, hostile and moving in the will to harm, assails (the soul) in a double way—by act and by speech—may that heavy spell rebound upon him; and do you cleanse our embodied being from the stain of perverse utterances.

Mantra 5

उत वा यः सहस्य प्रविद्वान्मर्तो मर्तं मर्चयति द्वयेन । अतः पाहि स्तवमान स्तुवन्तमग्ने माकिर्नो दुरिताय धायीः ॥

And again, whoever—though claiming knowledge and strength—being a mortal assails a mortal by a double means, from that guard us, O Agni, when we affirm and praise; let none place us into the path of misfortune and wrong-going.
