Sukta 1.14
Kaṇva
Agni (with Viśve Devāḥ as accompanying powers)
Gāyatrī (likely for RV 1.14.1; short 3×8 structure typical of the opening of many sūktas)
RV 1.14 is an invocatory Agni-hymn in Gāyatrī metre where the Kaṇva seer asks Agni to come with the Viśve Devāḥ for Soma-drinking and to perform the yajña as the flawless Hotṛ. The hymn repeatedly emphasizes Agni’s role as summoner and carrier—bringing the gods “here,” establishing ṛta (right order), and enabling the honeyed delight (madhu/Soma) to be rightly received.
Mantra 1
With these words of service, O Agni, with all the gods for the drinking of Soma—come; and sacrifice too: lead the divine powers into us and effect the offering, so the delight (Soma) may be received in a right and luminous order.
Mantra 2
The Kaṇvas have called you; the illumined ones sing you with their thought-forces. With the gods, O Agni, come here—so our inspired understandings may become a path for the divine approach.
Mantra 3
Indra with Vāyu, Bṛhaspati, Mitra with Agni, Pūṣan, Bhaga, the Ādityas, and the Marut host—may these powers be present: force and life-breath, inspired word, harmony and will, guidance and delight, the luminous law, and the storming energies that break the inner resistance.
Mantra 4
Forward for you are borne the Soma-drops—intoxicating with ecstasy, eager to gladden—honeyed drippings that take their seat in the cups: in us may these essences gather as delight that awakens and drives the consciousness toward the luminous victory.
Mantra 5
The Kaṇvas, seekers of help, adore you—those who have strewn the sacred seat, bearing the offering and made ready: may our prepared ground and concentrated will allow your divine work to proceed without hindrance.
Mantra 6
Those bearers who carry you—bright-backed with clarified light, yoked by the mind—bring the gods for the drinking of Soma: may the inner energies harnessed to intention convey the divine powers into our awakened delight.
Mantra 7
Make those Powers—adorable and increasers of the Truth—(come) with their own companion energies, O Agni; O sweet-tongued Flame, let them drink of the honeyed delight.
Mantra 8
Those who are adorable, those who are to be invoked—let them drink with the tongue (of flame), O Agni, of the honeyed delight; you who make the Vaṣaṭ-call effective, seal the offering in power.
Mantra 9
From the luminous realm of the Sun, the Dawn-awakened seer—Hotar—draws here all the gods: he brings the powers of light into this field of the sacrifice (the being).
Mantra 10
With all the powers, drink the soma-sweet honey, O Agni, with Indra and with Vāyu; drink by the stations of Mitra—by the harmonizing laws that hold the right measure.
Mantra 11
You are the Hotar established by Manu, O Agni; you take your seat in the sacrifices. Therefore perform for us this flawless journey of offering—carry it through in right action.
Mantra 12
Yoke, indeed, the two ruddy ones to the chariot—your green and your red powers, O shining One; by them bring the gods here: make the higher forces arrive and act in us.
It asks Agni to come with all the gods for Soma-drinking, to carry out the sacrifice correctly, and to bring the divine powers into the ritual space.
Because Agni is the inviter and carrier; the hymn calls the ‘All-Gods’ as a complete set of divine forces to participate in the offering and strengthen ṛta (right order).
In ritual terms it means making the deities present at the altar to receive offerings; inwardly it suggests drawing higher qualities and clarity into one’s consciousness through the awakened inner fire (Agni).
