Mantras

Mantra 1

What bond the Goddess Nirṛti hath fastened on thee—a cord upon the neck, a bond not lightly loosed—this same for thee I sunder, for life, for splendour, for strength. Eat thou this gladdening food, sent forth (to renewed being).

Mantra 2

Homage be unto thee, O Nirṛti of keen-edged might: thy iron binding-nooses are cut apart. Yama giveth thee back to me again; to that Yama be homage—homage unto Death.

Mantra 3

To the iron (fetter), O stock-bound one, thou art smitten; here thou liest beset by deaths a thousandfold. With Yama, in accord with the Fathers, raise thou this man up unto the highest heaven.

Mantra 4

With kindlings duly laid for thee, O youthful Bull, O Agni, the patron (calls) all things hither. At Iḍā’s place thou art kindled: bring thou to us wealth and goodly store.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a ritual image for deadly constriction—misfortune, wasting, or a death-crisis—spoken of as a cord on the neck or a hard-to-loosen fetter. The mantra treats it as something that can be ‘sundered’ by authoritative speech and rite.

Its primary aim is recovery: release into āyus (life), varcas (vigor), and bala (strength). The mention of Yama and the Pitṛs adds a regulated, lawful framing—countering untimely death and, if fate is fixed, seeking an auspicious ‘best state’ rather than chaotic harm.

Agni seals the unbinding by restoring auspicious domestic order. Kindling the fire and invoking vasu (good stores) shifts the situation from crisis and inauspicious binding to protection, nourishment, and stable vitality.
