Mantra 1

अरातिनाशनम्। १ विराड्गर्भा प्रस्तारपङ्क्तिः, ४ पथ्याबृहती, ६ प्रस्तारपङ्क्तिः। आ नो भर मा परि ष्ठा अराते मा नो रक्षीर्दक्षिणां नीयमानाम्। नमो वीर्त्साया असमृद्धये नमो अस्त्वरातये

Bring hither to us (our good); stand not about us, O Arāti; assail us not when the priestly fee is being led away. Homage to Vīrtsā, to ill-success; homage be to Arāti.

Mantra 2

यमराते पुरोधत्से पुरुषं परिरापिणम्। नमस्ते तस्मै कृण्मो मा वनिं व्यथयीर्मम

The man whom thou settest foremost, O Arāti, the all-besetting harasser—to thee, to that (power), we render homage: disturb not my gain, my prize.

Mantra 3

प्र णो वनिर्देवकृता दिवा नक्तं च कल्पताम्। अरातिमनुप्रेमो वयं नमो अस्त्वरातये

Forward for us be the gain, god-fashioned, by day and also by night let it be made ready. We press on after Arāti: homage be to Arāti.

Mantra 4

सरस्वतीमनुमतिं भगं यन्तो हवामहे । वाचं जुष्टां मधुमतीमवादिषं देवानां देवहूतिषु

Sarasvatī, Anumatī, and Bhaga—approaching, we invoke. A speech, well-accepted, honey-fraught, have I uttered amid the gods’ invocations unto the Gods.

Mantra 5

यं याचाम्यहं वाचा सरस्वत्या मनोयुजा । श्रद्धा तमद्य विन्दतु दत्ता सोमेन बभ्रुणा

Whom I with speech do supplicate—by Sarasvatī, mind-yoked—may Faith this day obtain for me that boon, bestowed and sealed with tawny Soma.

Mantra 6

मा वनिं मा वाचं नो वीर्त्सीरुभाविन्द्राग्नी आ भरतां नो वसूनि । सर्वे नो अद्य दित्सन्तोऽरातिं प्रति हर्यत

Harm not our gain, harm not our speech: let both, Indra and Agni, bring hither riches unto us. All ye who would bestow on us this day—drive back, repel the Hostile Power.

Mantra 7

परोऽपेह्यसमृद्धे वि ते हेतिं नयामसि । वेद त्वाहं निमीवन्तीं नितुदन्तीमराते

Away—begone, O Unprospering One: thy weapon we lead off and scatter. I know thee, Ārāti, wasting, stabbing—therefore I expel thee.

Mantra 8

उत नग्ना बोभुवती स्वप्नया सचसे जनम्। अराते चित्तं वीर्त्सन्त्याकूतिं पुरुषस्य च

Yea, naked, arising, by dream thou clingest fast to men; O Ārāti, assailing mind and purpose—both the thought and the resolve of a person.

Mantra 9

या महती महोन्माना विश्वा आशा व्यानशे। तस्यै हिरण्यकेश्यै निरृत्या अकरं नमः

She who is mighty, of measure overmastering, who hath spread through all the regions—unto that golden-haired Nirṛti have I rendered reverence.

Mantra 10

हिरण्यवर्णा सुभगा हिरण्यकशिपुर्मही। तस्यै हिरण्यद्रापयेऽरात्या अकरं नमः

Golden of hue, auspicious, on golden seat enthroned, the mighty—unto that golden-cloaked Arāti have I made obeisance.

Frequently Asked Questions

To make one’s speech ritually effective—“accepted” and “honeyed”—so the gods grant assent and prosperity, while misfortune and obstruction are turned away.

Sarasvatī steadies inspired speech, Anumatī supplies divine approval for the act, and Bhaga grants the fortunate share—together they ensure the rite succeeds and yields gain.

In Atharvanic practice, naming and offering reverence (namo) can function as pacification: the powers are acknowledged and neutralized so they do not block success or spread misfortune.
