Sukta 27

Mantra 1

सुरक्षा। गोभिष्ट्वा पात्वृषभो वृषा त्वा पातु वाजिभिः । वायुष्त्वा ब्रह्मणा पात्विन्द्रस्त्वा पात्विन्द्रियैः

With cows may the Bull protect thee; the mighty one protect thee with winning strengths. Vāyu protect thee with brahman-power; Indra protect thee with lordly faculties.

Mantra 2

सोमस्त्वा पात्वोषधीभिर्नक्षत्रैः पातु सूर्यः । माद्भ्यस्त्वा चन्द्रो वृत्रहा वातः प्राणेन रक्षतु

May Soma guard thee with the healing herbs; may the Sun protect thee with the constellations. From maddening harms may the Moon protect thee; may the Vṛtra-slaying Wind, with vital breath, keep thee in ward.

Mantra 3

तिस्रो दिवस्तिस्रः पृथिवीस्त्रीण्यन्तरिक्षाणि चतुरः समुद्रान्। त्रिवृतं स्तोमं त्रिवृत आप आहुस्तास्त्वा रक्षन्तु त्रिवृता त्रिवृद्भिः

Three are the heavens, three the earths, and three the mid-air spaces; four are the oceans. A threefold stoma, threefold, the Waters call it: may those Waters guard thee with threefold fence, by threefold powers.

Mantra 4

त्रीन्नाकांस्त्रीन्त्समुद्रांस्त्रीन् ब्रध्नांस्त्रीन् वैष्टपान्। त्रीन् मातरिश्वनस्त्रीन्त्सूर्यान् गोप्तॄन् कल्पयामि

Three heavens, three oceans, three bright Bradhnas, three Vaiṣṭapas; three Mātariśvans, three Suns—these guardians I appoint for ward.

Mantra 5

घृतेन त्वा समुक्षाम्यग्न आज्येन वर्धयन्। अग्नेश्चन्द्रस्य सूर्यस्य मा प्राणं मायिनो दभन्

With ghee I thoroughly anoint thee, O Agni, strengthening thee with oblation-butter. Let not the sorcerers assail thy vital breath—under Agni, under Moon, under Sun.

Mantra 6

मा वः प्राणं मा वोऽपानं मा हरो मायिनो दभन्। भ्राजन्तो विश्ववेदसो देवा दैव्येन धावत

Let not your vital breath, let not your out-breath, be assailed—let not Haras, let not the sorcerers, do you hurt. Shine forth, all-knowing Gods: with divine might run on, and drive them hence.

Mantra 7

प्रानेनाग्निं सं सृजति वातः प्राणेन संहितः । प्राणेन विश्वतोमुखं सुर्यं देवा अजनयन्

By Breath the Wind sendeth Fire forth, by Breath compacted and made one. By Breath the Gods engendered Sūrya, the all-faced, looking every way.

Mantra 8

आयुषायुःकृतां जीवायुष्मान् जीव मा मृथाः । प्राणेनात्मन्वतां जीव मा मृत्योरुदगा वशम्

With Life’s own power, life-fashioning, live on, long-lived; live, and die thou not. By Breath, among the self-possessed, live on; go not up into Death’s subjection.

Mantra 9

देवानां निहितं निधिं यमिन्द्रोऽन्वविन्दत् पथिभिर्देवयानैः । आपो हिरण्यं जुगुपुस्त्रिवृद्भिस्तास्त्वा रक्षन्तु त्रिवृता त्रिवृद्भिः

The treasure of the Gods, laid up in hiding, which Indra tracked and found by paths that lead to heaven—Gold did the Waters guard with triple ward: may those same Waters guard thee, threefold, with threefold guards.

Mantra 10

त्रयस्त्रिंशद् देवतास्त्रीणि च वीर्याऽणि प्रियायमाणा जुगुपुरप्स्व१न्तः । अस्मिंश्चन्द्रे अधि यद्धिरण्यं तेनायं कृणवद् वीर्याणि

The Thirty-three Deities, yearning for what is dear, guarded threefold Powers within the Waters. The gold that lieth here upon this Moon—therewith let this man work deeds of power, and win him powers.

Mantra 11

ये देवा दिव्येकादश स्थ ते देवासो हविरिदं जुषध्वम्

Ye Gods who, eleven in heaven, abide—ye Gods, accept with favour this oblation here.

Mantra 12

ये देवा अन्तरिक्ष एकादश स्थ ते देवासो हविरिदं जुषध्वम्

Ye Gods who, eleven in number, stand in the mid-air,—ye Gods, accept ye graciously this oblation.

Mantra 13

ये देवा पृथिव्यामेकादश स्थ ते देवासो हविरिदं जुषध्वम्

Ye Gods who, eleven in number, stand upon the earth,—ye Gods, accept ye graciously this oblation.

Mantra 14

असपत्नं पुरस्तात् पश्चान्नो अभयं कृतम्। सविता मा दक्षिणत उत्तरान्मा शचीपतिः

Rival-less before us, and behind, let fearlessness be wrought for us. Let Savitar guard me from the south; from the north let the Lord of Śacī guard me.

Mantra 15

दिवो मादित्या रक्षन्तु भूम्या रक्षन्त्वग्नयः । इन्द्राग्नी रक्षतां मा पुरस्तादश्विनावभितः शर्म यच्छताम्। तिरश्चीनघ्न्या रक्षतु जातवेदा भूतकृतो मे सर्वतः सन्तु वर्म

From heaven let the Ādityas guard me; from earth let the Fires guard. Let Indra-and-Agni guard me from the front; let the Aśvins on either side bestow shelter. Let the crosswise Aghnyā protect; let Jātavedas—let the Makers of beings—be for me, from every side, an armour.
