Inside Sukta 110

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is kindled in the human home and immediately takes up his role as divine priest who sacrifices to the gods and serves as messenger and seer.

  2. Development

The hymn expands Agni’s mediating function: summoning divine powers, establishing the rite in Ṛta, and integrating the sacrifice with cosmic rhythms such as Dawn and Night.

  3. Climax

Agni, ‘born at once,’ measures out the sacrifice and becomes purogāḥ—leader before the gods—so that the offering, made ready with svāhā, is correctly received.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with a clear ritual intention: in the Hotṛ’s ṛta-aligned speech, may the gods eat/accept the prepared oblation, sealing the exchange between humans and gods.

The deity: Agni Jātavedas

  • In the VedaAgni is the kindled divine fire in the human dwelling, the Hotṛ who offers to the gods, and the dūta (messenger) who brings the gods to the rite. As Jātavedas, he is the knower of births/origins and the bearer of sacred knowledge who awakens and measures out the sacrifice.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between earth and heaven by transforming offerings into a form the gods can receive, sustaining the cosmic exchange that upholds Ṛta. He inaugurates and leads the divine procession (purogāḥ), establishing the sacrificial order that supports prosperity and right alignment.
  • Inner significanceAgni signifies awakened will and luminous intelligence that can ‘carry upward’ intention, speech, and offering. Psychologically, he is the clarifying inner fire that organizes life by truth (ṛta), enabling disciplined aspiration and effective action.

The seer

  • AniruktaThis sukta is transmitted without a named ṛṣi (anirukta), typical of several late Maṇḍala 10 hymns; the voice represents a ritualist’s perspective focused on Agni’s priestly offices and the correct establishment of yajña in Ṛta.

Attributes of the deity

  • Jātavedas (knower of origins)
  • Hotṛ/priestly power of offering
  • Dūta (messenger between human and divine)
  • Kavi (seer-poet, inspired intelligence)
  • Pracetāḥ (wide-awake, discerning)
  • Purogāḥ (goes before, leads the gods)

Also by this seer

  • No additional hymns can be securely attributed to this same unnamed seer in the Rigvedic Anukramaṇī tradition.
  • The hymn reflects a broader Maṇḍala 10 tendency toward ritual synthesis and theological generalization rather than a single family-poet lineage.

The rite, step by step

  • Kindle and establish Agni in the dwelling/altar (samiddha).
  • Invite Agni to act as Hotṛ: offering to the gods on behalf of the sacrificer.
  • Request Agni to ‘bring’ the gods to the rite, ensuring right attention and presence.
  • Align the rite with Ṛta through correct speech/formulae (hotṛ’s directive word).
  • Acknowledge the sacrificial rhythm supported by cosmic complements (e.g., Uṣas–Naktā) as the rite is awakened and seated in its proper ‘yoni’ (right seat/order).
  • Conclude with svāhā and the presentation of havis, asking the gods to partake.

Offerings

  • Havis (general oblation)
  • Ghee/clarified butter (ājya)
  • Kindling sticks/samidhs
  • Optional Soma or cooked offering depending on the larger rite context

Frequently Asked Questions
