Suta (narrating the Narada Purana’s tirtha-mahatmya instructions)
Vrata: none
Rasa: {"primary_rasa":"shanta","secondary_rasa":"none","emotional_journey":"A matter-of-fact rule-setting verse: establishes a general tīrtha-observance and then narrows it by listing exceptions."}
It standardizes pilgrimage discipline: austerities like tonsure and fasting are generally prescribed at tīrthas, but certain supremely sanctifying sites are treated as special cases with distinct local procedures.
By framing pilgrimage as regulated self-restraint, the verse supports bhakti through bodily discipline (upavāsa) and ritual humility (muṇḍana), while also emphasizing that some holy centers have unique devotional customs that should be honored.
Kalpa (ritual procedure) is implied: it gives a tīrtha-yātrā vidhi—what austerities are generally done and where exceptions apply—showing rule-based application of dharma in practice.
