The Gift of the Sandals and Delegated Kingship
लक्ष्मीश्चन्द्रादपेयाद्वा हिमवान्वा हिमं त्यजेत्।अतीयात्सागरो वेलां न प्रतिज्ञामहं पितुः।।2.112.18।।
lakṣmīś candrād apeyād vā himavān vā himaṃ tyajet | atīyāt sāgaro velāṃ na pratijñām ahaṃ pituḥ || 2.112.18 ||
たとえ月が光を失い、ヒマラヤが雪を捨て、海がその境を越えることがあっても――私は父の誓いを決して捨てない。
Dear brother, whether out of affection or greed, your mother has done this for yoursake. It should not agitate your mind. You should conduct yourself as one should towards one's mother.
Satya and pratijñā-pālana: truthfulness expressed as unwavering fidelity to a vow, even when circumstances tempt compromise.
Rāma refuses Bharata’s request to return, declaring that he will not break the pledge connected with his father’s word.
