Sukta 16

Mantra 1

स्वस्तये प्रार्थना। प्रातरग्निं प्रातरिन्द्रं हवामहे प्रातर्मित्रावरुणा प्रातरश्विना । प्रातर्भगं पूषणं ब्रह्मणस्पतिं प्रातः सोममुत रुद्रं हवामहे

At morning we invoke Agni; at morning Indra we invoke; at morning Mitra and Varuṇa; at morning the Aśvins. At morning Bhaga, Pūṣan, and Brahmaṇaspati; at morning Soma, and also Rudra, we invoke.

Mantra 2

प्रातर्जितं भगमुग्रं हवामहे वयं पुत्रमदितेर्यो विधर्ता। आध्रश्चिद् यं मन्यमानस्तुरश्चिद् राजा चिद् यं भगं भक्षीत्याह

At morning we invoke Bhaga, won and mighty—we, Aditi’s son, the Ordainer. Even the needy man, deeming him (his), and even the strong, yea even the king, is said to partake of that Bhaga.

Mantra 3

भग प्रणेतर्भग सत्यराधो भगेमां धियमुदवा ददन्नः । भग प्र णो जनय गोभिरश्वैर्भग प्र नृभिर्नृवन्तः स्याम

Bhaga, our leader; Bhaga of unfailing bounty—O Bhaga, uplift this our prayer, bestowing upon us. Bhaga, bring us forth increase with cows and horses; Bhaga, with men—may we be rich in men.

Mantra 4

उतेदानीं भगवन्तः स्यामोत प्रपित्व उत मध्ये अह्नाम्। उतोदितौ मघवन्त्सूर्यस्य वयं देवानां सुमतौ स्याम

And now may we be possessed of fortune; and in the foretime, and in the midst of days. And at the Sun’s uprising, O bounteous one, may we be in the gods’ good favor.

Mantra 5

भग एव भगवाँ अस्तु देवस्तेना वयं भगवन्तः स्याम । तं त्वा भग सर्व इज्जोहवीमि स नो भग पुरएता भवेह

Bhaga indeed—let the god be the Fortunate One; thereby may we be fortunate. Thee, O Bhaga, do all men verily invoke again and again: be thou for us, O Bhaga, our leader in front, here.

Mantra 6

समध्वरायोषसो नमन्त दधिक्रावेव शुचये पदाय । अर्वाचीनं वसुविदं भगं मे रथमिवाश्वा वाजिन आ वहन्तु

For the rite let the Dawns bow down together, as Dadhikrāvan to the shining track. Hitherward let the prize-winning steeds, as with a chariot, bring me Bhaga, the wealth-finder, even Fortune’s share.

Mantra 7

अश्वावतीर्गोमतीर्न उषासो वीरवतीः सदमुछन्तु भद्राः । घृतं दुहाना विश्वतः प्रपीता यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः

Steed-rich, cow-rich, hero-rich—O Dawns—let the auspicious ones shine forth for us each day; yielding ghee, well-satisfied from every side. Do ye, with blessings of welfare, protect us evermore.
