Sukta 6

Mantra 1

शत्रुनाशनम्। पुमान् पुंसः परिजातोऽश्वत्थः खदिरादधि । स हन्तु शत्रून् मामकान् यानहं द्वेष्मि ये च माम्

For the destruction of foes. A manly Aśvattha, sprung from a man, from off the Khadira: let it smite my enemies—whom I hate, and who hate me.

Mantra 2

तानश्वत्थ निः शृणीहि शत्रून् वैबाधदोधतः । इन्द्रेण वृत्रघ्ना मेदी मित्रेण वरुणेन च

Those enemies, O Aśvattha, shatter forth—drive them away with vehement thrust: with Indra the Vṛtra-slayer, with Medī, with Mitra and with Varuṇa.

Mantra 3

यथाश्वत्थ निरभनोऽन्तर्महत्यऽर्णवे। एवा तान्त्सर्वान् निर्भङ्ग्धि यानहं द्वेष्मि ये च माम्

As, O Aśvattha, thou hast expelled (them) within the mighty flood, even so break forth and shatter away all those—whom I hate, and who hate me.

Mantra 4

यः सहमानश्चरसि सासहान इव ऋषभः । तेनाश्वत्थ त्वया वयं सपत्नान्त्सहिषीमहि

Thou who, prevailing, movest abroad, as one all-conquering, like a bull: with that thy conquering might, O Aśvattha, with thee as aid, may we subdue our rivals.

Mantra 5

सिनात्वेनान् निरृतिर्मृत्योः पाशैरमोक्यैः । अश्वत्थ शत्रून् मामकान् यानहं द्वेष्मि ये च माम्

Let Nirṛti bind these men with Death’s nooses that are not to be unloosed—O Aśvattha—my enemies, whom I hate, and those who hate me.

Mantra 6

यथाश्वत्थ वानस्पत्यानारोहन् कृणुषेऽधरान्। एवा मे शत्रोर्मूर्धानं विष्वग् भिन्द्धि सहस्व च

As thou, O Aśvattha, O forest-lord, makest men not to mount, but to be beneath; even so do thou cleave utterly the head of mine enemy, and prevail besides.

Mantra 7

तेऽधराञ्चः प्र प्लवन्तां छिन्ना नौरिव बन्धनात्। न वैबाधप्रणुत्तानां पुनरस्ति निवर्तनम्

Downward-turned, let them drift forth, like a boat cut loose from its mooring: for those whom repulse hath driven away, verily there is no turning back again.

Mantra 8

प्रैणान् नुदे मनसा प्र चित्तेनोत ब्रह्मणा । प्रैणान् वृक्षस्य शाखयाश्वत्थस्य नुदामहे

Forth do I thrust them, with mind, forth with intent, and also with the sacred spell; forth do we thrust them with a branch of the tree, even of the Aśvattha.
