Adhyaya 8: Dialogue on the Ethical Limits of Subsistence and the Five Great Sacrifices (Dharmavyādha, Mātaṅga, and Prasanna)

Dharmavyādha-Mātaṅga-Prasanna Saṃvādaḥ

Ethical-Discourse (Dharma, Non-violence, Household Economy, Ritual Ecology)

Varāha narrates to Pṛthivī the life of a dharmavyādha who, though living as a hunter for a long period, restricts harm to minimal subsistence and maintains household dharma through truthfulness, fire-service, hospitality, and regular śrāddha at Mithilā on festive days. His daughter Arjunakī is married to Prasanna, son of Mātaṅga. After the daughter is harshly accused by her mother-in-law of being tied to violence, the dharmavyādha visits Mātaṅga’s home and refuses to eat, arguing that grain-based food can entail extensive unseen killing of aquatic and small creatures, whereas his own livelihood claims fewer lives. He frames this as an ethical critique of consumption and as a demand for proper ritual-ethical division, invoking the pañca-mahāyajñas. He then returns, installs his son as heir, and undertakes pilgrimage to Puruṣottama, reciting a Viṣṇu-stotra centered on cosmic protection of Earth.

What happens

  1. How it opens

Varāha addresses Pṛthivī on dharma as lived under constraint: how a householder sustains life while limiting harm, introducing a dharmavyādha (hunter by livelihood) who nevertheless upholds gṛhastha-dharma through satya, agni-sevā, atithi-satkāra, and regular śrāddha at Mithilā on parvan days.

  2. Stories within

Life and conduct of the dharmavyādha (hunter) who practices gṛhastha-dharma with restraint; Marriage alliance: Arjunakī (daughter of the dharmavyādha) and Prasanna (son of Mātaṅga); Household accusation and the dharmavyādha’s refusal to eat as an ethical demonstration; Transition from household succession (installing the son as heir) to pilgrimage to Puruṣottama with Viṣṇu-stotra

  3. The turning point

Domestic conflict becomes the ethical test: after Arjunakī (the hunter’s daughter) is married to Prasanna (son of Mātaṅga), the mother-in-law accuses her lineage of violence. The dharmavyādha visits Mātaṅga’s home and refuses to eat, arguing that grain-based food can involve extensive ‘unseen’ killing (jalajantu and minute beings in water, soil, processing), whereas his regulated subsistence hunting claims fewer lives overall; he reframes the dispute as a comparative ethics of harm and a demand for proper ritual-ethical vibhāga grounded in the pañca-mahāyajñas.

  4. How it ends

The dharmavyādha’s reasoning culminates in a dharma-synthesis: (1) harm must be assessed by totality (visible + invisible), (2) livelihood must be bounded by necessity and restraint, and (3) household life is purified and stabilized through the pañca-mahāyajñas, truthfulness, hospitality, and śrāddha. Having restored ethical clarity and social equilibrium, he returns, installs his son as heir, and turns from household responsibility to tīrtha-yātrā.

Tirtha focus

  • Pilgrimage MeritPilgrimage is presented as a culminating prāyaścitta-like refinement after fulfilling gṛhastha duties: going to Puruṣottama and reciting a Viṣṇu-stotra oriented to cosmic guardianship of Earth is treated as a high-merit act that stabilizes dharma, purifies residual fault from subsistence, and aligns the pilgrim with Viṣṇu’s protective sovereignty.

Ritual instructions

  • Primary RitualPañca-mahāyajña observance within gṛhastha-dharma, with śrāddha on parvan days
  • BenefitEthical purification through minimized total harm, stabilization of household order, reconciliation of social blame through dharma-argument, merit for ancestors via śrāddha, and devotional protection of Earth through Viṣṇu-oriented pilgrimage and praise.

The narrative frame

  • Dialogue ToneDidactic-ethical and corrective, using a domestic dispute to teach comparative ahiṃsā and the ritual ecology of household life; culminates in devotional elevation via tīrtha and stotra.

Closing phalashruti

No explicit, standalone phalaśruti is stated in the provided summary; the chapter closes functionally with the turn to Puruṣottama and a Viṣṇu-stotra that frames devotion as Earth-protective theology (kṣiti-rakṣā), implying merit through pilgrimage and stotra-recitation rather than enumerating a formal fruit.

The emotional journey

  • Dominant RasaŚānta (with a strong Dharmic/Didactic register)
  • Emotional ProgressionMoral tension and social shame (accusation of violence) → principled firmness (refusal to eat; ethical critique of unseen harm) → reconciliation through clarified dharma (pañca-mahāyajña framework) → renunciatory calm and uplift (succession arranged; pilgrimage and stotra).

Planning a pilgrimage

  • Visit FeasibilityFeasible as a modern pilgrimage arc: begin with Mithilā-region remembrance (Janakpur area in Nepal/nearby Mithila cultural belt) as a cultural anchor, then travel to Purī (Odisha) identified with Puruṣottama in later living tradition; the chapter’s emphasis is more on ethical preparation than route logistics.
  • Best SeasonOctober–March (cooler months for Odisha travel; also aligns with major festival cycles)
  • Modern Location NamePurī (Jagannātha Purī), Odisha, India
  • Related FestivalRatha Yātrā (Purī); also major Viṣṇu/Jagannātha observances such as Snāna Yātrā and Kartika-related vows (regional)

Frequently Asked Questions

The text develops a comparative ethics of harm: it argues that moral evaluation should consider both visible and invisible forms of violence involved in sustaining a household. Through the dharmavyādha’s refusal to eat at Mātaṅga’s home, the chapter instructs that consumption and ritual practice require scrutiny of unintended killing (e.g., small creatures in water and grain processing) and emphasizes regulated conduct—truthfulness, hospitality, śrāddha, and the pañca-mahāyajñas—as a framework for minimizing harm while fulfilling social obligations.

The chapter specifies recurring ritual timing rather than a named season: śrāddha is performed “sadā parvaṇi parvaṇi” (on parvan days, i.e., festival/observance junctions in the lunar calendar). It also notes a long duration marker for the hunter’s life (“caturvarṣasahasrikam,” four thousand years) as narrative chronology, not a ritual schedule.

Environmental stewardship appears indirectly through the ethics of food and livelihood: the narrative foregrounds ‘hidden’ ecological harm (jalajantu and other small life forms affected by grain and water use) and frames ethical living as minimizing total injury across ecosystems. The concluding movement to Puruṣottama and the Viṣṇu-stotra further place Earth (kṣmā/kṣiti) under cosmic protection, aligning devotion with the safeguarding of terrestrial stability.

The narrative references the dharmavyādha and his son Arjunaka, his daughter Arjunakī, Mātaṅga and Mātaṅga’s son Prasanna, and invokes Brahmā as the originator of the pañca-mahāyajñas and the creation of plants for sacrificial and sustenance purposes. No explicit royal genealogy is developed here beyond the general mention of a “nṛpa” in the hunter’s earlier context.
