The Prescribed Emergence and Procedure of the Mathurā Circumambulation
Parikramā
सुमङ्गलां ततो गच्छेद्यात्रासिद्धिं प्रसादयेत् ॥ सर्वमङ्गलमाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके ॥
sumaṅgalāṁ tato gacched yātrāsiddhiṁ prasādayet || sarvamaṅgalamāṅgalye śive sarvārthasādhike ||
Varāha (default dialogue frame; speaker not explicit in fragment)
Indirect: Mathurā-maṇḍala framing; the Śaiva stuti coexists with Vaiṣṇava-Kṛṣṇa sacred geography typical of Mathurā-māhātmya layers.
Proceed to Sumāṅgalā and propitiate Śiva with a success-in-pilgrimage prayer (yātrā-siddhi-prārthanā).
Seeking divine prasāda aligns intention and action, strengthening yātrā-phala; irreverent or distracted travel yields attenuated merit.
Pilgrimage is not mere movement; it is consecrated by intention (saṅkalpa) and grace (prasāda), expressed through stuti.
At key stations, articulate a clear prayer for yātrā-siddhi; cultivate gratitude and dependence on īśvara rather than egoic ‘achievement’.
Varāha Purāṇa Mathurā-māhātmya: sequential tīrtha-visits and stuti formulas (surrounding verses)
It preserves a formulaic invocation used in pilgrimage settings and records a named stop (Sumāṅgalā), indicating a mapped itinerary of sacred points.
A site called Sumāṅgalā within the described yātrā route (precise modern identification uncertain without additional manuscript context).
The verse emphasizes seeking ‘yātrā-siddhi’ through respectful supplication rather than presuming entitlement to spiritual results.
