They yoke the honey-backed, formidable, tireless steed to the chariot with wide wheels, moving loftily. Sisters and near-kin cleanse him; those of one navel strengthen the swift one with energy.
The Soma-current becomes a powerful aśva—vital force disciplined and harnessed to the mind’s chariot (ratha). ‘Wide wheels’ suggests broad, all-sided movement of consciousness. The ‘sisters/kinsfolk’ are allied powers in the being—harmonizing faculties (thought-forces, sense-energies, prāṇic streams) that cleanse (marjayanti) and then feed strength (ūrjayanti) into the purified dynamism so it can carry the yogic journey.
Spiritual force must be yoked and guided; purification is not isolation but coordinated support from the whole being. When allied faculties cooperate, energy becomes swift, stable, and capable of higher movement.
Soma purification, Chariot of consciousness, Allied powers (sisters/kinsfolk), Vital dynamism
The Ninth Maṇḍala preserves specialized Soma-poetry; this verse reflects a technical-yogic symbolism of harnessing and cleansing forces.
The seer articulates the inner method: purification (marjana) followed by empowerment (ūrjā) and right yoking (yuj) of energy for the ascent.
The moving force that is yoked to the cosmic chariot—carrying offerings, inspirations, and energies toward the gods.
Purified prāṇa-vital dynamism backed by delight; becomes a swift carrier of aspiration and effective action.
Soma filtration and preparation; accompaniment to yoking/pressing imagery in Soma rite

Rolling, chariot-like momentum; repeated consonant clusters support ‘yoking’ and ‘cleansing’ actions.
Builds a sense of harnessed power—steady acceleration without agitation.
Purification stage: Soma is cleansed by waters/filters; ‘yoking’ reflects preparation of the force for divine journey and offering.
During pavamāna chants as Soma is made ready for offering
Recitation while Soma is strained/handled, invoking purification and strengthening
As a practice-mantra for aligning breath, energy, and mind before meditation or work—‘yoking the steed’ of vitality to a wider purpose.
√yuj ‘yoke’ (PIE *yeug-), key for disciplined integration. √mṛj ‘wipe/cleanse’ indicates ritual filtering and inner polishing of consciousness. vāja is not merely ‘prize/food’: from a strength-plenitude semantic field, hence vājin ‘forceful, swift bearer of plenitude’. The feminine agents (sisters/kinsfolk) align with waters/streams (āpas) or supportive faculties that purify Soma.
integration (yoking) of forces, purification as preparation, vāja as plenitude of force
Yoking to the wide-wheeled chariot symbolizes energies moving in right order rather than scattered impulse.
Purification implies truth-clarity in the instrument.
Organization of forces into an ascending movement.
Integral yoga orientation: coordination of faculties for ascent and action.
Horse=vital energy; chariot=psycho-physical vehicle; honey=delight; cleansing=refinement of habits and impulses; wide wheels=widened consciousness.
Yoke the ‘horse’ of prāṇa to the wide chariot of awareness; purify and then empower the life-force.
Maṇipūra (ūrj/ojas) integrated upward toward Ājñā (guidance)
4-4-6 breathing: inhale (yoking), hold (steadying), exhale (cleansing flow), feeling energy become ‘wide-wheeled’.
Collected dynamism—calm strength ready for higher movement.
Before japa or concentration, scan the vital for turbulence; ‘polish’ it with steady breath and reverent attention; then deliberately offer that energy into a wider aim.
Maintain clear udātta on action-verbs (yuñjantí, marjayánti, ūrjayánti) to convey dynamism; let svarita naturally fall after peaks.
Do not rush conjuncts; keep the ‘yuñjanty urucakre’ phrase as one flowing unit.
madhupṛṣṭhaṃ: retroflex ‘ṣṭh’ cluster—articulate cleanly, ghoram: aspirate ‘gh’ voiced, urucakre: roll ‘r’, keep ‘c’ crisp, ūrjayanti: long ‘ū’ then ‘rj’ cluster without inserting a vowel
Firm, rhythmic, ‘marching’ but not harsh; slightly brighter on ūrj/strength words.
