Soma Pavamana

This Pavamāna Soma hymn praises the pressed Soma as he runs through the filter, becoming bright, strong, and fit for the gods’ drinking in the sacrifice. The verses celebrate Soma’s swift currents, his power to bestow wealth, vigor, and inspired fullness, and his role as the refined essence (rasa) gathered by the seers. It culminates with a metahymnic fruit (phalaśruti): the reciter of the Pavamānī verses is nourished by Sarasvatī with milk, ghee, honey, and water—symbols of inspired abundance.

Inside Sukta 67

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Soma is hailed as the powerful, gladdening stream-holder in the sacrifice and is urged to purify himself while bringing abundance (RV 9.67.1).

  2. Development

The hymn follows Soma’s movement as living currents—swift, prize-seeking like chariots—going forth for the gods’ enjoyment and for the sacrificer’s gain (e.g., RV 9.67.17).

  3. Climax

Soma’s purified flow is presented as concentrated power and essence (rasa) gathered by seers, effective both ritually (for the gods) and spiritually (for the reciter).

  4. Where it settles

A phalaśruti closes the hymn: one who studies/recites the Pavamānī verses receives Sarasvatī’s nourishing gifts—milk, ghee, honey, and water—signifying sustained inspiration and prosperity (RV 9.67.32).

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is praised as the gladdener (mandra), most powerful in the rite, the stream-holder who runs in shining currents through the woolen filter, becoming pure, sweet, and exhilarating for the gods.
  • Cosmic functionAs the consecrated juice and its divine principle, Soma mediates between humans and gods: he invigorates Indra and the deities, sustains ṛta through sacrifice, and distributes vitality, wealth, and inspired potency.
  • Inner significanceSoma Pavamāna symbolizes the refining of consciousness: raw impulse and desire are ‘pressed’ and ‘filtered’ into clarity (śuci), joy (ānanda), and luminous insight that can be offered upward as devotion and received back as strength and inspiration.

The seer

  • Ascribed in tradition to Pavamāna-Soma seers; specific r̥ṣi for RV 9.67 is not securely identified without Anukramaṇī confirmationThe Mandala 9 corpus is characteristically attributed to multiple seer-families and priestly lineages who composed hymns for Soma’s purification (pavamāna) during pressing; RV 9.67 participates in this liturgical-poetic stream rather than highlighting a single biographical r̥ṣi.
