Rishi

Kaṇva lineage (Aṣṭaka 8 Kaṇva collection)

Devata

Uṣas (Dawn) (probable from aruṇa + spreading beam imagery; hymn context continues with Aśvins and Uṣas)

Chandas

Gāyatrī (probable; requires verification)

This hymn from the Kāṇva collection opens in the luminous imagery of Uṣas, the true Dawn who arrives from afar and spreads her beams in every direction, awakening life and right movement. As the hymn proceeds, the praise-frame broadens into an Aśvin-oriented petition for thriving—cattle, offspring, strength, and nourishing “iṣ” (increase)—and culminates by contrasting the true path of gain with empty display, commending generous patrons (the Cedayas) as exemplars of right progress.

Inside Sukta 5

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A vivid epiphany of Dawn: from far away she appears as if close, ruddy-flashing, spreading her beam in all directions.

  2. Development

The hymn moves from cosmic description to human petition—seeking nourishment, strength, cattle, and offspring—then folds in the Aśvins as swift agents who ‘bring’ thriving increase.

  3. Climax

The strongest turning point is the direct boon-request: the divine powers are asked to convey ‘pīvarī iṣaḥ’—rich, nurturing increase—for energies, progeny, and herds (outer and inner wealth).

  4. Where it settles

It closes by distinguishing the true track of progress from mere song-display, praising a community/patrons (Cedayas) as surpassing in generosity and thus aligned with the right path of increase.

The deity: Uṣas

  • In the VedaUṣas is the ‘true’ (satī) ruddy-shining dawn who comes from afar as if near, flashing with crimson light and spreading her radiance (bhānu) everywhere, awakening beings and setting the world into motion.
  • Cosmic functionShe opens the day, drives away darkness, reveals paths, stirs creatures to activity, and renews the order of time by her regular return; in the hymn’s wider movement, her coming also prepares the way for the Aśvins’ help and boons.
  • Inner significanceDawn symbolizes the arising of clarity in the mind—discernment, hopeful energy, and the first illumination that makes right choice and right movement possible; the Aśvin dimension adds the sense of swift aid, healing, and practical uplift once the inner light has appeared.

The seer

  • Kāṇva (Kāṇva lineage seer)Kāṇva gotra / Kāṇva family (Aṣṭaka 8 Kāṇva collection) · The Kāṇvas are among the most prominent Rigvedic seer-families, noted for vivid dawn-and-journey imagery, practical ritual petitions for prosperity, and hymns that link cosmic light with social generosity and right conduct.

Also by this seer

  • Large portions of Mandala 8 (Kāṇva corpus) are attributed to Kāṇva seers and their descendants.
  • Hymns to Uṣas, the Aśvins, Indra, and allied deities in the Kāṇva collection, often emphasizing renewal, protection, and increase.
  • A recurrent poetic style in Mandala 8: brisk meters, energetic invocations, and patron-focused praise (dāna-stuti elements).

The rite, step by step

  • Perform morning purification and establish the sacred fire (Agni) with customary observances.
  • Recite the opening verses as Uṣas-invocation: welcome the approaching light and affirm the spread of her beams.
  • Continue with petitions for increase and well-being (iṣ), aligning household aims (cattle, offspring, strength) with ṛta (right order).
  • Invoke the Aśvins as swift bringers of nourishment and protection, asking them to ‘carry’ (vahatam) abundant sustenance.
  • Conclude with a resolve toward the ‘right path’—rejecting mere display and affirming generosity and truthful progress—followed by standard oblations and closing formulas appropriate to the rite.

Offerings

  • Ghee (ājya) into the fire
  • Milk/curds or simple morning oblations (as per household rite)
  • Soma-related offerings when used in Soma context
  • Symbolic offering of praise (stotra/śastra) as the hymn itself

Frequently Asked Questions

It begins with clear Dawn (Uṣas) imagery—ruddy light and spreading beams—but later verses function as Aśvin petitions for nourishment and well-being. Many Mandala 8 hymns move fluidly between closely linked morning deities.

Cosmically it is sunrise filling the world with light; inwardly it points to clarity spreading through the mind, making right perception and right action possible.

That closing praise highlights that true prosperity is tied to right conduct and generosity. The hymn contrasts genuine increase and giving with mere show, presenting worthy patrons as models of the ‘right path.’
