Sukta 88

Sukta 10.88

Devata

Agni (cosmic fire; world-upholder)

Chandas

Trishtubh (likely; needs confirmation)

This hymn praises Agni as the unaging, heaven-touching fire who drinks the oblation and upholds the worlds through ṛta (cosmic order). It recalls how the gods generated and fashioned Agni in a threefold form, making him the transformer of growth who ripens plants and sustains life. The sukta also evokes Mātariśvan as Agni’s carrier and links the spread of dawn’s light with the proper establishment of yajña and priestly order.

Inside Sukta 88

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is invoked as the unaging oblation-drinker who touches heaven and discovers the luminous world, established for the upholding of existence and law.

  2. Development

The hymn expands Agni from ritual flame to cosmic principle: the gods generate him by stoma and power, and he is shaped to pervade both worlds and perform transformative work in nature.

  3. Climax

Agni’s threefold establishment for the realms of becoming and his role as the ripener of ‘many-formed’ plants—fire as the engine of life, order, and manifestation.

  4. Where it settles

Mātariśvan’s range is measured with dawn’s appearing; as he approaches the sacrifice, the rite is properly set and the priestly functions settle into order, affirming yajña as a stabilized, ongoing work.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the oblation-drinker (haviṣ-pā), unaging (ajara), a finder of the luminous world (svar-vid), and heaven-touching (divi-spṛś). He is generated by the gods through stoma (hymnic affirmation) and established as threefold for the planes of becoming.
  • Cosmic functionWorld-upholder and mediator: he sustains the cosmic structure through ṛta/dharma, links heaven and earth, and transforms matter into life—ripening plants and enabling nourishment through heat and light.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened inner fire—clarity, aspiration, and disciplined will—that receives offerings (attention, breath, intention) and converts them into insight, growth, and ordered action.

  • Mediator between humans and gods (yajña-vāhana)
  • Unaging, ever-renewed presence in sacrifice

Also by this seer

  • Attributed generally within the late (10th) Maṇḍala milieu rather than to a single securely identified family seer
  • Themes parallel other Agni-cosmology hymns in Maṇḍala 10 that integrate ritual, creation, and priestly function

The rite, step by step

  • Ācamana and quieting of mind; orient to east and recall ṛta (order) as the intention
  • Kindle or attend the fire (gārhapatya/āhavanīya as applicable), inviting Agni as haviṣ-pā (receiver of oblations)
  • Recite the sukta (or select mantras) with emphasis on Agni’s cosmic upholding and threefold presence
  • Offer ghee/oblations while contemplating Agni as the link of heaven and earth and as ripener of plants
  • Conclude with a short śānti/ṛta-saṅkalpa: may order, vitality, and right action be established

Offerings

  • Ghṛta (ghee)
  • Samidhs (fuel sticks)
  • Optional: fragrant herbs/resins where customary
  • Optional: cooked offering (anna) symbolically aligned with Agni as ‘pācaka’ (ripener/cooker)
