Sukta 32

Sukta 10.32

Chandas

Jagatī (likely; 12-syllable tendency in 10.32; requires full metrical verification)

RV 10.32 is a late-book Indra hymn that invites the bountiful Maghavan to take his seat at the Soma-pressing, awaken to the pressed essence, and bestow “both”—the offering’s acceptance and the prosperity it yields. Moving through images of a god-seeking path, protective powers, and honeyed abundance, it culminates in a vow to complete auspicious ritual works and to hold Soma inwardly “in the heart,” joining outer sacrifice with inner devotion.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Inside Sukta 32

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct invitation: Indra is called to come forward, take his seat, and accept the choicest boons through the inspired work of the sacrificer.

  2. Development

The hymn expands from seating/awakening Indra by Soma to broader protection and abundance motifs—god-seeking pathways, allied storm powers, and the overcoming of decay through the gifts of the deathless.

  3. Climax

The turning point is the assurance of honeyed protection and the sense that divine giving transcends limitation (even aging/decline) when the rite is rightly aligned.

  4. Where it settles

It ends with a pledge to complete auspicious ritual actions, addressing the Soma vessel and patronal generosity, and sealing the rite by holding Soma inwardly ‘in the heart.’

The deity: Indra, with Soma and allied divine powers in the background

  • In the VedaHe is addressed as Maghavan (“the bounteous one”), responsive to well-prepared offerings and to inspired speech (dhī).
  • Cosmic functionChampion of strength and victory: he releases vitality, breaks obstacles, and secures abundance and protection for the community, especially through the Soma-sacrifice that empowers his deeds.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened force of courageous will and luminous intelligence in the human being—roused by the ‘Soma’ of concentrated joy/insight—so that inner power becomes generous, protective, and creatively effective.

The seer

  • Anirukta (Late Mandala 10 attribution)RV 10.32 belongs to Mandala 10 where several hymns have uncertain or mixed attributions; the piece is valued more for its ritual-poetic function (Indra’s invitation and Soma-awakening) than for a clearly preserved family lineage.

The rite, step by step

  • Prepare the ritual ground and seat (āsana/barhis) and establish focused intention through dhī (inspired thought).
  • Press and clarify Soma; fill the kalaśa (Soma vessel) and arrange cups for offering.
  • Invite Indra to ‘come forward’ and ‘sit’ (āsīd) at the rite; recite praise to rouse him to the Soma essence.
  • Offer Soma libations with accompanying verses; request ‘both’ acceptance of offering and resulting growth/prosperity.
  • Invoke protective encirclement and ‘honey’ (madhu) imagery—sweetness, delight, well-being—around the sacrificers.
  • Conclude with an affirmation of auspicious works accomplished and an inner appropriation: Soma held ‘in the heart’ as sustained devotion/resolve.

Offerings

  • Soma libations (pressed juice)
  • Ghee/clarified butter (as customary accompaniment)
  • Optional oblations in fire (agni) within the Soma setting
  • Dakṣiṇā (gifts) to priests, implied by maghāni/bounties language

Frequently Asked Questions

It invites Indra (Maghavan) to come to the Soma sacrifice, take his seat, and be awakened by the pressed Soma so he grants protection and generous gifts.

Because the setting is the Soma-pressing ritual: Soma is prepared and offered to Indra, and the kalaśa is the vessel that holds the pressed juice central to the rite.

Alongside the external offering, it suggests an inner practice: keeping the inspired joy/clarity (Soma) within oneself as steady devotion and strength while seeking Indra’s help.
