In the Ramayana, Lanka is an island city built by Vishwakarma, with inner halls of gold. Ramayana 4.58.20, 3.48.11 The same epic shows Sita, lodged in an Ashoka grove of Lanka, the city ruled by Ravana, absorbed in thoughts of Rama. Ramayana 1.1.73 The Sri Ramcharitmanas tells how Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, leapt the ocean, entered Lanka and burned the city. Ramcharitmanas 7.7.142 Crossing by a bridge, Rama reaches Lanka and slays Ravana in battle, the Ramayana says. Ramayana 1.1.81, 1.3.34 Afterwards, the Ramayana says, Rama consecrated Vibhishana as king of the rakshasas in Lanka. Ramayana 1.1.85
