What the texts say

In the Bhagavata Purana, Vibhishana is one of three sons of Vishrava, with his brothers Ravana and Kumbhakarna. Bhagavatam 4.1.37 In the Sri Ramcharitmanas, he urges Ravana to give back Sita and worship the Treasury of Mercy. Ramcharitmanas 6.5.140 There, Ravana kicked him for his counsel, and Vibhishana set out joyfully toward Rama, who gave him refuge. Ramcharitmanas 6.7.171, 5.5.56, 1.3.51 In the Ramayana, Rama, pleased with him, ordered Vibhishana consecrated as king of the rakshasas in Lanka. Ramayana 6.19.25, 1.1.85 After Ravana was slain, Vibhishana hastened to perform the funeral rites for his brother. Ramayana 6.114.102
