What the texts say

In the Ramayana, Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the wind god, illustrious and mighty, with a diamond-hard frame and the speed of Garuda. Ramayana 1.17.15 He declares himself the servant of Rama, king of Kosala, and the minister of King Sugriva. Ramayana 5.59.23, 5.34.39 Sent from Mount Rishyamukha, he approaches Rama and Lakshmana in a mendicant's disguise, offering Sugriva's friendship.
