atithiruvāca | devatvena na me kāryaṃ yajñāṃśarahitena ca | tadahaṃ sādhayiṣyāmi yathā muktirbhaviṣyati
Atithi (Guest)
Type: kshetra
Listener: Devas
Scene: The atithi-brāhmaṇa, calm and resolute, declines divinity without yajña-share and declares intent to pursue liberation; devas listen in surprise and respect.
Spiritual freedom (mukti) is higher than mere exalted status; dharma is measured by true fulfillment and right order.
This line continues the tīrtha-māhātmya narrative without naming a particular tīrtha explicitly in the verse.
It rejects “godhood without yajña-share,” implying that ritual participation/portioning is integral to dharmic recognition.
