Pañcāvaraṇa-mārga Stotra to Yogeśvara Śiva
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Umāpati
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga account; it is a mahātmya-style glorification of Nandīśvara as eternally worshipped even by the devas, including Nārāyaṇa—asserting Śiva’s supremacy and the exalted status of His gaṇa-lord.
Significance: Encourages reverence to Nandī as the gateway to Śiva (dvāra-bhakti): honoring Nandī before Śiva-darśana is portrayed as aligning with the devas’ own practice.
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: creative
Offering: pushpa
The verse elevates Nandīśvara as a supremely radiant devotee and guardian of Śiva’s dharma, teaching that proximity to Pati (Śiva) and steadfast devotion (nityam) sanctify even Śiva’s attendants, making them worthy of divine worship.
In Saguna Śiva worship—especially before the Śiva-liṅga—devotees traditionally honor Nandi as the foremost bhakta and gatekeeper of Śiva’s presence; the verse supports this by stating that even the devas worship and bow to Nandīśvara.
A practical takeaway is to begin Śiva-pūjā by offering reverence to Nandi (namaskāra), cultivating bhakti and humility; mentally contemplate Nandi’s unwavering service while reciting Śiva’s mantra (such as the Pañcākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”).
