Inquiry into the Expansion of Śiva’s Vibhūti
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Sthala Purana: Not a site-specific (sthāla) passage; it is a mangalācaraṇa-style śaraṇāgati to Mahādeva identifying the whole cosmos as His vibhūti.
Significance: Cultivates śaraṇāgati (refuge) and recognition that all carācara is Śiva’s vibhūti; supports the Siddhānta orientation of devotion leading to anugraha.
Type: stotra
Cosmic Event: Cosmic immanence: the entire jagat (carācara) presented as Śiva’s vibhūti (all-pervasive sovereignty).
It establishes prapatti (taking refuge) in Śiva as Pati—the omniscient, unconquered Lord—affirming that all beings and worlds are pervaded by His vibhūti, and that liberation begins with surrender to Him.
By declaring the whole cosmos as Śiva’s manifestation, it supports Saguna worship (such as the Śiva-liṅga) as a valid, concentrated focus for devotion to the same Supreme who transcends form yet graciously becomes accessible through form.
A simple daily practice is Śiva-śaraṇāgati: mentally offer yourself at Śiva’s feet while repeating the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” contemplating the moving and unmoving universe as His vibhūti.
