Soma Pavamāna (Indu/Indavaḥ)

This short Pavamāna Soma hymn celebrates the pressed Soma-drops as they rush forward in purification, spreading nourishment and inspired thought for the worshippers. It also turns the purifying Soma into a moral and protective power, asking him to destroy “withholding” and hostile forces that obstruct prosperity and right-mindedness. The hymn culminates in a prayer that Soma’s strength and beloved ecstasy carry the sacrificers safely “from level to level.”

Mantras

Mantra 1

May the unimpelled Soma-drops for us speed forward, pressed out, the bright ones in the vast heavens. Let our impulsions and nourishments spread out; let the non-givers perish like strangers, and let our thoughts win the gain.

Mantra 2

May the Soma-drops speed for us, pouring out ecstasy, those riches by which we yoke the eager steed. Beyond the circumventing claim of any mortal, may we bear the riches in every way.

Mantra 3

And one’s own withholding becomes an enemy; another’s withholding becomes a wolf. Like thirst running over the dry land, they spread together—smite them, O Soma, as you purify yourself, these hard-to-master forces.

Mantra 5

Thus, O Indu, the first splendours press out your essence—well-being, well-formed in beauty. From level to level, O purifying one, carry us through; manifest your force, let your dear ecstasy be present in us.

The deity is Soma Pavamāna—Soma as the purified, filtered, flowing draught (Indu/Indavaḥ) that brings vitality, inspiration, and protective power.

It asks Soma to spread nourishment and right impulses, help inspired thought win gains, and destroy obstructive forces like withholding, hostility, and predatory harm.

Because Soma’s physical filtering in the ritual symbolizes a clarifying power: as Soma becomes pure, the mind and community are prayed to become strong, prosperous, and protected from inner and outer negativity.
