Sukta 9.57
Soma Pavamāna
This short Soma Pavamāna hymn praises Soma as he flows in unbroken streams through the filter, like rain descending from heaven, moving toward abundant strength (vāja). As the juice is purified and ‘polished,’ Soma is envisioned as kingly, law-abiding, and swift like a falcon settling on treasure, and he is asked to bring all riches from heaven and earth to the worshippers.
Mantra 1
प्र ते धारा असश्चतो दिवो न यन्ति वृष्टयः । अच्छा वाजं सहस्रिणम् ॥
Forward go your unceasing streams, like rains from heaven, toward the thousandfold plenitude of force.
Mantra 2
अभि प्रियाणि काव्या विश्वा चक्षाणो अर्षति । हरिस्तुञ्जान आयुधा ॥
He flows beholding all the beloved poetic powers; the tawny one drives forward his weapons—energies of effective action.
Mantra 3
स मर्मृजान आयुभिरिभो राजेव सुव्रतः । श्येनो न वंसु षीदति ॥
He, being polished with the powers of life, strong as a king and faithful to the right law, settles like a falcon upon the desirable treasure.
Mantra 4
स नो विश्वा दिवो वसूतो पृथिव्या अधि । पुनान इन्दवा भर ॥
Bring to us all riches from heaven and from the earth; O Indu, in your purifying, bear them to us.
It praises Soma as he is purified (pavamāna) in flowing streams, compares his movement to heavenly rain, and asks him to bring strength (vāja) and riches to the worshippers.
Soma Pavamāna is the Soma juice in its purified, clarified form—called Indu—flowing through the ritual filter and believed to grant vitality, victory, and prosperity.
Rain imagery shows Soma’s abundant, unstoppable flow, while the falcon image suggests swift, decisive arrival and secure settling on the ‘treasure’—the desired prize of strength and wealth.
