In this brief Triṣṭubh hymn, Vasiṣṭha invokes Savitṛ as the divine Impeller who travels through the midspace with his steeds, bearing gifts and right direction for human life. Savitṛ is asked to “settle” the worshippers in a fitting dwelling, to set their works in motion, to expand luminous intelligence, and to grant sustaining nourishment and wide vitality. The hymn ends as a spoken offering of praise, seeking enduring well-being and protection.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Let Savitṛ, the divine Impeller rich in true treasures, come to us, moving through the mid-world with his steeds. Holding in his hand many boons for the human soul, may he settle us in the right dwelling and set us forth on the true sending-forth of our works.

Mantra 2

Uplifted are his two wide, unbinding arms, golden, reaching to the ends of heaven. Now indeed his greatness is manifest; even the Sun follows after him in the giving of the right works of power.

Mantra 3

May Savitṛ the god, the strong helper, impel for us the riches as lord of plenitudes. Spreading wide the luminous intelligence, he then gives us the nourishment that sustains the mortal being.

Mantra 4

These words of ours adore Savitṛ of the good tongue, of full hands, of the fair hands of giving. May he place in us a bright and vast vitality of being; and may you (all powers) guard us always with well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Savitṛ is the Vedic “Impeller”—a divine power of awakening light that sets beings and actions in motion and grants right direction, prosperity, and well-being.

It asks Savitṛ to bring boons, place the worshipper in a fitting and stable ‘dwelling,’ impel their works in the right way, expand luminous intelligence, and give sustaining nourishment.

It is especially suitable at dawn or before beginning important work, as a prayer for auspicious initiation, clarity of mind, and protective well-being (svasti).
