Sukta 28

Mantra 1

ब्रह्मा ण इन्द्रोप याहि विद्वानर्वाञ्चस्ते हरयः सन्तु युक्ताः । विश्वे चिद्धि त्वा विहवन्त मर्ता अस्माकमिच्छृणुहि विश्वमिन्व ॥

O Indra, come near to our formative word (brahman), you who know; let your tawny powers be yoked and turned toward us. For all mortals indeed call you; yet hear especially our call, O mover of the whole being.

Mantra 2

हवं त इन्द्र महिमा व्यानड्ब्रह्म यत्पासि शवसिन्नृषीणाम् । आ यद्वज्रं दधिषे हस्त उग्र घोरः सन्क्रत्वा जनिष्ठा अषाळ्हः ॥

The call to you, O Indra, has spread your greatness—this brahman which you protect by your force among the seers. When you set the thunderbolt in your hand, fierce and formidable, you are born by will as the unconquered power.

Mantra 3

तव प्रणीतीन्द्र जोहुवानान्त्सं यन्नॄन्न रोदसी निनेथ । महे क्षत्राय शवसे हि जज्ञेऽतूतुजिं चित्तूतुजिरशिश्नत् ॥

By your leading, O Indra, those who call intensely you gather together, as if you draw the human seekers into the two worlds. For your vast sovereignty and force you were born; even the un-impelled you set into motion—you, the impeller, drive them onward.

Mantra 4

एभिर्न इन्द्राहभिर्दशस्य दुर्मित्रासो हि क्षितयः पवन्ते । प्रति यच्चष्टे अनृतमनेना अव द्विता वरुणो मायी नः सात् ॥

By these days (and works) with Indra, make us capable, for hostile friendships and human factions flow against us. When untruth is proclaimed in reply by those without the right way, may Varuṇa, the wise wielder of inner law, protect us doubly.

Mantra 5

वोचेमेदिन्द्रं मघवानमेनं महो रायो राधसो यद्ददन्नः । यो अर्चतो ब्रह्मकृतिमविष्ठो यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

We would indeed speak of this Indra the bountiful, when he gives us the great plenitudes of spiritual wealth and power. He who is the surest helper of those who chant and fashion the inspired word—may you guard us always with harmonies of well-being.
