Sukta 5.23
Agni
This short Agni hymn asks the Fire-god to bring "sahantama"—the most conquering, luminous wealth (rayi, dyumna) that presses forward against hostile forces. It presents Agni as the beloved Hotṛ sought by all peoples and concludes with a direct plea for Agni to blaze brightly in the worshippers’ homes, granting prosperity and protection.
Mantra 1
O Agni, bring to us the most conquering plenitude—an inner wealth of luminous power that presses forward. You who approach all the human energies and overcome in the fields of force, carry us into victory.
Mantra 2
That wealth, O Agni—victorious in the battles—bring to us by your mastering force. For you are the true and wondrous giver of the plenitude that is rich in rays of illumination.
Mantra 3
For all the peoples, in one accord and with the sacrifice made ready, seek you—the beloved Invoker—in their dwelling-places; they long for many desirable fulfillments through you.
Mantra 4
For he, the universal guide of the human energies, sets his conquering power against the assailing forces. O Agni, in these our dwelling-places shine upon us with richness—O bright one; blaze, O luminous purifier, blaze.
It asks Agni to bring conquering, forward-driving prosperity (rayi) and luminous power (dyumna), and to lead the worshipper into victory while protecting the home.
Hotṛ means the invoker-priest. Agni is praised as the one who calls the gods and carries offerings, so people in many dwellings seek him as their beloved ritual mediator.
It refers to keeping the sacred fire (or ritual flame) bright and active in the home and sacrifice, symbolizing protection, purity, and the growth of wellbeing and clarity.
