Sukta 4.14
Agni in relation to Uṣas; invocation to the Aśvins (Nāsatyā)
Triṣṭubh (probable)
This short hymn links the kindling radiance of Agni with the first unveiling of Uṣas (Dawn), portraying the morning as a coordinated epiphany of light, order, and awakened movement. It then turns into a direct invitation to the Aśvins (Nāsatyā) to arrive swiftly at the sacrifice at daybreak and to enjoy the honey-sweet Soma. The purpose is to secure timely divine presence, safe passage (suvitā), and invigorating strength for the worshippers.
Mantra 1
Facing the Dawn, Agni the knower of births has revealed himself, the god growing luminous by his great powers. O Nāsatyas, wide in your movement and worthy of vast song, come with your chariot to this sacrifice; draw near to us indeed.
Mantra 2
Savitṛ, the god, has raised aloft the sign; making the light for all the worlds. He has filled heaven and earth and the mid-region; and Sūrya, fully aware, spreads out with his rays.
Mantra 3
Bringing the ruddy lights, she has come with her illumination—vast, manifold, and conscious with her rays. Awakening us for the happy journey, the goddess Dawn moves forward with her well-yoked chariot.
Mantra 4
Let your most potent chariots and steeds bring you here at the full breaking of Dawn. For these Soma-pressings are for your honey-drinking; in this sacrifice, O mighty pair, take joy and increase the force within us.
It celebrates the morning emergence of light—Agni shining as Dawn appears—and then invites the Aśvins to come quickly to the sacrifice and enjoy Soma.
At dawn, fire and dawn-light mirror each other: Agni ‘reveals’ brilliance in the ritual space while Uṣas opens the day in the cosmos, so the hymn treats them as a coordinated awakening.
The Aśvins are swift divine twins known for help and healing. The hymn asks them to arrive at daybreak on their chariot, drink the honey-sweet Soma, rejoice in the rite, and increase vigor and success for the worshippers.
