This brief Agni hymn presents the fire-god as Heaven’s son and Earth’s embodied presence, the all-knowing priest who correctly arranges the gods in sacrifice. Mantra 1

अग्ने दिवः सूनुरसि प्रचेतास्तना पृथिव्या उत विश्ववेदाः । ऋधग्देवाँ इह यजा चिकित्वः ॥

O Agni, you are the son of Heaven, the foreknower; and by your body you are also of Earth, the knower of all. In your discerning wisdom, sacrifice here to the gods each in their right order and distinct power.

Mantra 2

अग्निः सनोति वीर्याणि विद्वान्त्सनोति वाजममृताय भूषन् । स नो देवाँ एह वहा पुरुक्षो ॥

Agni, the knower, wins for us the heroic powers; he wins the vāja—plenitude of force—for the immortal widening, adorning it with his flame. Bring here to us the gods, O widely-dwelling one, and lead them into our field.

Mantra 3

अग्निर्द्यावापृथिवी विश्वजन्ये आ भाति देवी अमृते अमूरः । क्षयन्वाजैः पुरुश्चन्द्रो नमोभिः ॥

Agni shines forth for Heaven-and-Earth, universal in birth, a divine power firm in the immortal. Dwelling in the plenitudes, many-luminous, he is increased by our acts of reverent assent.

Mantra 4

अग्न इन्द्रश्च दाशुषो दुरोणे सुतावतो यज्ञमिहोप यातम् । अमर्धन्ता सोमपेयाय देवा ॥

O Agni and Indra, come near to the sacrifice in the house of the offerer, where the Soma has been pressed. Unfailing gods, grow strong for the drinking of Soma—so that the delight may empower the inner victory.

Mantra 5

अग्ने अपां समिध्यसे दुरोणे नित्यः सूनो सहसो जातवेदः । सधस्थानि महयमान ऊती ॥

O Agni, you are kindled in the house amid the waters; eternal, O son of force, knower of births. Greatening the common seats of our being, you widen them by your protection and fostering help.
