Sukta 26

Sukta 2.26

Rishi

Gṛtsamada (Āṅgirasa) (traditional ascription for Mandala 2 hymns)

Devata

Brahmaṇaspati (Br̥haspati) as the power of the formative Word and right-discriminating will (implicit across RV 2.26)

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable for RV 2.26; verse-length and cadence align with triṣṭubh usage in this hymn)

RV 2.26 invokes Brahmaṇaspati (Br̥haspati) as the lord of the sacred Word who makes the utterance straight, victorious, and effective against the “godless” (non-offering) impulse. The hymn praises the prosperity, social support, and inner strength that come to the faithful offerer, and it culminates in Br̥haspati’s guidance on the right path and his broad protection from distress and injury.

Mantras

Mantra 1

Straight and true is the utterance that seeks; it wins like a conqueror for the one who strives, and it assails the godless will by the very power of aspiration for the Divine. It wins a rich hero-force even in the hard battles; the sacrificer (the doer of the inner offering) divides and apportions the nourishment of being, separating it from what cannot and will not sacrifice.

Mantra 2

Sacrifice, O hero; cast forward the will that seeks—make the mind a blessed and luminous instrument in the breaking of the Coverer. Prepare the offering so that thou becomest fortunate in the right way of attainment; we choose and call down the protective help of Brahmaṇaspati.

Mantra 3

He indeed is upheld by people, by the community, by birth itself; by sons he brings the plenitude of force, and by men the riches of being—who with a mind of faith serves and makes welcome the Father of the gods, Brahmaṇaspati, through the offering.

Mantra 4

Whoever has arranged for him the offerings rich with clarity and delight, him Brahmaṇaspati leads forward on the right path. He widens the safe spaces, guards from anguish and from hurt; even from constriction he protects—wonderful, far-working in his effective action.
